10 Essential Oils For A Happy, Healthy Holiday Home
Author: Liz Fulcher
Sunday, October 15, 2017

For centuries aromatic plant material was gathered and brought into homes for holiday celebrations, filling the air with the sweet fragrance of plants. Even today, many people like to drape pine branches on the mantle or fill bowls with cinnamon and clove buds to emit the natural aromas we associate with the holidays.

In these modern times, it’s not necessary to use the actual plants to experience their beautiful aromas during a holiday celebration. Not when we have the essential oils that have been extracted from the very aromatic botanicals our ancestors enjoyed once upon a time.

There are a number of specific fragrances we have come to associate with the holiday season and which evoke memories of home and family, instinctively making us feel content and reassured. The spicy aromas of cinnamon clove and fresh evergreens are classic holiday scents. Depending on your background, rich resins like Frankincense and Myrrh may elicit a spiritual stirring in the heart. These scents, and many more, can awaken feelings of seasonal joy and the comforting reminder of home, family and love.

When you use essential oils in the home for holiday celebrations, aim for an aroma that is suggestive without being overpowering. Gently build up an aromatic ambience that reflects the occasion by using several different essential oils through the home.

Bay Laurel (Laurus nobilis)
I confess that Bay Laurel is one of my favorite essential oils any time of the year. Therapeutically, it is a great support for the respiratory system and can be helpful for allergies, sneezing and stuffy heads. I love adding it to diffuser blends because it lends an uplifting spicy note to the aroma and will help keep the whole family healthy. Bay Laurel blends well with Bergamot, Clary Sage, Eucalyptus, Fir Needle, Ginger, Lavender, Orange, Patchouli, and Rosemary.

Cinnamon Leaf (Cinnamomum zylanicum)
What aroma says, “The holidays are here!” better than cinnamon? This warming essential oil is strongly antibacterial, similar to clove, making it perfect for diffusing when the house is full of people.
Use sparingly. Avoid near children, as it can be very irritating. Cinnamon Leaf blends well with Anise, Cardamom, Clove, Ginger, Lemon, Orange, and Tangerine.

Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum)
Cardamom belongs to the same family as Ginger and has a warming, sweet, spicy aroma. It is traditionally used to help with digestive issues and respiratory congestion. During the holiday season, I like to use it to help increase mental concentration when my mind is over busied with long lists of things to do. Cardamom blends well with Bergamot, Cedarwood, Cinnamon, Clove, Orange,

Clove Bud (Eugenia caryophyllata)
The wonderfully warm aroma of clove bud is another closely associated with the holidays (think mulled wine). The classic blend of orange essential oil and clove bud in your diffuser will create a welcoming atmosphere that will appeal to everyone. This can be an irritating essential oil so keep away from children. Clove blends well with Bergamot, Lavender, Lavendin, Rose, and Ylang Ylang.

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
Lavender isn’t necessarily an aroma one associates with the holidays, but I felt compelled to include it here given the stressful nature of the holiday time and the need to Just. Be. Lavender blends well with all essential oils.

Orange (Citrus sinensis)
Orange offers the uplifting aroma of sweet freshly peeled orange, a favorite of everyone at any age during the holidays. It is guaranteed to brighten even the darkest days of fall or winter. Orange blends well with almost all essential oils, especially the spices like Black Pepper, Cinnamon, Clove,  Nutmeg, and Cardamom.

Fir Needle (Abies sibirica)
Fir needle, also known as Siberian Fir, has a clean and earthy aroma reminiscent of standing in the woods. If you have an artificial Christmas tree, you can give it the aroma of a real conifer by adding a few drops to a spray bottle of water and lightly mist over the tree. Avoid any expensive wooden surfaces as it may damage the varnish. I love Fir Needle in a steam inhalation to clear my sinuses. Fir Needle blends well with other conifer essential oils as well as Grapefruit, Lemon, Lavender, Rosemary, and Spearmint.

Ginger (Zingiber of cinale)
This warming, sweet and spicy oil can be helpful when you are lacking motivation and just can’t seem to get anything done. Historically, ginger has been used to help with digestive issues and is great for respiratory support. Blends well with Cedarwood, Frankincense, Lemon, Lime, Orange, Patchouli, Sandalwood, and Tangerine.

Frankincense (Boswellia carterii)
For many, this aroma has religious associations since it is associated with the birth of baby Jesus. It is a deeply relaxing essential oil that can help open the lungs and deepen breathing, increasing the relaxation response. Frankincense is a wonderful oil to help children sleep, and to settling them when they become overexcited as often happens during gatherings. Frankincense blends well with Geranium, Lavender, Lavendin, and

Cedarwood (Juniperus mexicana)
The rich, woody aroma of Cedarwood offers an earthy, grounding quality when holiday nerves are stretched by too much activity. I love to create a relaxing ambiance in the living room by adding 4 drops of Cedarwood oil in my diffuser with 4 drops of Orange and 2 drops of Ylang Ylang essential oil to create a sweet earthy calm. Cedarwood also blends well with Cypress, Geranium, Lavender, Marjoram, Patchouli, and Tangerine.
