RECIPE: Hair Shampoo

This luxurious shampoo contains Cocamidopropyl Betaine which is derived from Coconut Oil and helps control static (fly-away hair).

Project Level: Easy
Estimated Time: 1 Hour
Yield: 16 - 8 oz. Bottles

Ingredients

  • 1 Gallon(s) Clear Conditioning Shampoo
  • 1.5 Ounce(s) Caribbean Escape* Fragrance Oil 495
  • 16 Piece(s) 8 oz Natural Boston Round Plastic Bottle 24/410
  • 16 Piece(s) 24/410 Natural Smooth Disc Top
  • 2 Piece(s) Gloves Latex (Medium) - Powder Free
  • 1 Piece(s) 38/400 Gallon Jug Pump
  • 1.5 Ounce(s) Polysorbate 20

Equipment

  •  Glass Pyrex Bowl
  •  Large Spoon or Wooden Paint Stick
  •  Microwave
  •  Plastic Funnel
  •  Spatula
  •  Small Bowl for Mixing Fragrance
  •  Mixing Spoon
  •  Scale

Recipe Directions

  1. NOTE: If you are making these products for sale, good manufacturing practices recommend you wear a hairnet, gloves and a mask. We also recommend a clean apron.
  2. Remove cap from gallon jug of shampoo. Pour approximately 1/2 (64 oz.)  into a large glass pyrex bowl.
  3. Place bowl into microwave and heat for 1 minute. Take out and stir. Product should be warmed until it is a watery consistency. (DO NOT BOIL.)
  4. Mix .75 oz. of Caribbean Escape Fragrance Oil with .75 oz. of Polysorbate 20. Add this mixture to warmed shampoo base.
  5. NOTE: Polysorbate 20 is used to blend the fragrance oil with the shampoo which is a water-based product. This will give your shampoo a milky look. If you do not want to use it, you may see the fragrance settle to the bottom so the shampoo will need to be shaken before each use.
  6. Pour the fragranced shampoo into 8 of the 8 oz. bottles.  Each bottle should weigh 9.5 oz. by weight.
  7. Let product cool completely before putting on caps.  If product is too warm when capped, condensation will form on the inside of the bottle.
  8. Repeat above steps for remaining 64 oz. of shampoo.
  9. When all bottles have been capped, label product accordingly.

"If you use 2 oz of fragrance oil and 2 oz of polysorbate 20, that makes 4 oz of product. Why do we only use 2.5 oz of this mixture and what do we do with the rest?"
