RECIPE: Hemp Lotion (from scratch)

This lotion will soak into your skin and leave it feeling soft and smooth for hours. Hemp seed butter is considered one of the "driest" natural oils as it absorbs quickly into the skin. Provides excellent lubricity without being greasy.

Project Level: Moderate
Estimated Time: 1 Hour
Yield: Approx. 64 oz.

Ingredients

  • 48 Ounce(s) Distilled Water
  • 5 Ounce(s) Hemp Seed Butter Blend
  • 5 Ounce(s) Hemp Seed Oil - Natural
  • 3.2 Ounce(s) Emulsifying Wax - Soft & Silky
  • 2.56 Ounce(s) Stearic Acid
  • 1 Ounce(s) Rainforest* - EO & FO Blend 592
  • 0.5 Ounce(s) Vitamin E Natural T-50
  • 0.66 Ounce(s) Optiphen Plus
  • 8 Piece(s) 8 oz Clear Boston Round Plastic Bottle - 24/410
  • 8 Piece(s) 24/410 Black Smooth Disc Top Cap

Equipment

  •  Large Glass Mixing Bowl
  •  Microwave
  •  Spatula
  •  Stick Blender
  •  Scale - Digital Display (Professional)

Recipe Directions

  1. NOTE: If you are making these products for sale, good manufacturing practices recommend you wear a hairnet, gloves and a mask. We also recommend a clean apron.
  2. In large glass mixing bowl, add 48 ounces of water.
  3. Add to water, stearic acid and emulsifying wax.
  4. Place bowl in microwave and heat until stearic and wax is completely melted. This could take between 3-5 minutes.
  5. To water mixture, add in hemp butter and hemp oil. Gently stir to allow butter to soften.
  6. Using a stick blender, begin to blend. Continue blending until mixture starts to thicken. This may take at least 5 minutes.
  7. Once mixture begins to thicken, turn blender off.
  8. Add vitamin E and fragrance. Continue blending.
  9. Check temperature to be sure it is under 176 degrees. Add preservative and blend for additional 30 seconds.
  10. Pour lotion into bottles. Let completely cool before capping so that condensation does not form on inside of bottle.
  11. If the kit was purchased to make this lotion, the recipe will need to be made 3 times to fill all 24 bottles.
  12. Label product according to FDA regulations.

INCI Ingredient Label: Water, Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil (and) Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Cetearyl Alcohol (and) Ceteareth-20, Stearic Acid, Fragrance, Tocopherol, Phenoxyethanol (and) Caprylyl Glycol (and) Sorbic Acid

"I LOVE LOVE this recipe; however, it seems that if the lotion gets to be about 4 months old, the hemp oil aroma wants to take over. It smells 'old' at only 4 months old, the fragrance is barely registerable. any suggestions? "
