RECIPE: Honey Facial Bar

Myrrh Powder has been used medicinally for over 2,000 years because of its believed antiseptic, detoxifying and anti-inflammatory properties. It is very popular in soap and facial masks as it is believed to reduce blemishes while calming and rejuvenating tired skin.

Project Level: Easy
Estimated Time: 1 Hour
Yield: 10 - 3 oz. Bars

Ingredients

  • 2 Pound(s) Detergent Free Honey Soap - 2 lb Tray
  • 5 Teaspoon(s) Myrrh Gum Powder
  • 22.5 ml(s) Summer Honey - Certified 100% Natural 395
  • 1 Piece(s) Filigree Bee Soap Mold (MW 01)
  • 1 Piece(s) Natural Raffia

Equipment

  •  Glass Measuring Cup - 2 cup
  •  Measuring Spoons
  •  Microwave or Double Boiler
  •  Raffia
  •  Scale (for weighing soap)
  •  Spatula
  •  Whisk

Recipe Directions

  1. *NOTE:  If you are making these products for sale, good manufacturing practices recommend you wear a hairnet, gloves and a mask. We also recommend a clean apron.
  2. **NOTE:  Soap bars will be light in color but will darken over time to look more like the picture above. This will happen due to the vanilla content of the fragrance oil and also from the honey contained in the soap base.
  3. Weigh 5.5 oz. Detergent Free Honey MP Soap and cut up into 1 inch chunks. Place in small measuring cup and heat in microwave in 30 second bursts until completely melted.
  4. Add 4.5 ml Summer Honey FO and mix well.
  5. Pour evenly into all four of the Filigree Bee Soap Mold cavities filling each only half way. Set aside and allow to cool completely. *You may need to spritz with alcohol to pop any surface bubbles.
  6. Weigh 6 oz. Detergent Free Honey MP Soap and cut into 1 inch chunks. Place in small measuring cup and heat in microwave in 30 second bursts until completely melted.
  7. Add 4.5 ml Summer Honey FO and 2 tsp. Myrrh Gum Powder and mix well using whisk to break up any clumps.
  8. Spritz the soap in each of the four cavities heavily with alcohol. This will help the two layers to stick together.
  9. Pour evenly into all four of the Filigree Bee Soap Mold cavities filling each to the top. Set aside and allow to cool completely. *You may need to spritz with alcohol to pop any surface bubbles.
  10. Unmold soaps and set aside for 1-7 days to allow soap to dry and harden.
  11. Repeat above steps to make next 4 soaps. There should be enough soap for 2 additional soaps. Just cut recipe in half to make last 2 bars.
  12. To package, stack 2 soaps together and tie with raffia. Label accordingly.

WSP Questions And Answers

"I just made this and the top was clear (I understand this will darken over time), but the bottom layer (where you add the myrrh powder) is practically black. I even cut the second batch to one teaspoon of myrrh. Still black. Am I missing something here? How can I make both layers closer to golden? (Maybe time for the first layer!) :)"
