RECIPE: Lemon Bubble Cakes

These Bubble Cakes are the perfect combination of lemon and bubbles. They make for a great relaxing bubble bath!

Project Level: Moderate
Estimated Time: 1 Hour
Yield: 8 Bath Cakes

Ingredients

  • 8 Ounce(s) Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate)
  • 8 Ounce(s) Lathanol LAL Powder - aka: SLSa
  • 2.5 Ounce(s) Bubble Bar Hardener
  • 3-6 Tablespoon(s) Glycerin - Natural
  • 1 Ounce(s) Bubble Wash Pearlizer
  • 3 Tablespoon(s) Bubble Up
  • 5 ml(s) Lemon, Lemon, Lemon Fragrance Oil 205
  • 8 Drop(s) Stained Glass Lemon Yellow Liquid Color
  • 8 Piece(s) Premium Crystal Cello Bags (3.5" x 2" x 7.5")
  • 1 Piece(s) Light Yellow Curling Ribbon

Equipment

  •  Cookie Sheet
  •  Face Mask
  •  Large Glass Mixing Bowl - 2
  •  Measuring Spoons
  •  Wax Paper

Recipe Directions

  1. NOTE: If you are making these products for sale, good manufacturing practices recommend you wear a hairnet, gloves and a mask. We also recommend a clean apron.
  2. Carefully weigh all dry ingredients and add to a glass bowl. Gently mix with a wire whisk to incorporate all ingredients.
  3. Add fragrance oil to the dry mix and carefully mix together.
  4. Add liquid ingredients slowly while kneading ingredients together. The mixture will begin to take on the consistency of dough. When adding the glycerin, start with 3 Tablespoons and continue to add 1 Tablespoon (if necessary) until mixture takes on a doughy consistency.
  5. When the mixture begins to hold together in your hand, split the batch in half. Separate out 10 oz. into a 2nd bowl.
  6. In the first bowl, add the Stained Glass Lemon Yellow liquid colorant. Mix thoroughly until the color is fully incorporated and no white spots are left.
  7. On a sheet of wax paper, roll out the yellow "dough" into a large flat rectangle. It should be about 1/2" thick.
  8. Repeat the above step with the white "dough".
  9. Lay the white "dough" on top of the yellow and using the wax paper take one side and pull up and over. Pulling the dough real tight, keep rolling the mixture using the wax paper. Make sure not to roll the wax paper into the mixture and be sure to start rolling with the longest side in front of you.
  10. When the "dough" is completely rolled together, the ends will be open so make sure to push them together so that the "dough" looks like a log.
  11. Once your log is formed, use a soap cutter to cut your log into slices.
  12. When the Bubble Cakes are sliced, set them out on a cookie sheet. These will need to dry overnight.
  13. If kit was purchased to make product, there are enough ingredients to make another recipe of bubble cakes. Kit will yield approximately 16 bubble cake. If desired, package 2 in a cello bag and tie with curling ribbon.
  14. After they have set out overnight, wrap them in airtight plastic wrap or some other airtight container.
  15. TO USE: Crumble one bubble cake under warm running water and watch as the tub fills up with luxurious bubbles.

"Hello, I too followed this recipe to a T, but unfortunately got dry crumbs that could not be flattened on a sheet of wax paper. I even tried to make it from scratch all over again by adjusting the glycerin to a bit of higher amount, again, got nothing but crumbs when trying to flatten it. Please help me make this bubble cake successfully. Thank you. "

"Loved this recipe, I used a different scent. They smell strong but you can hardly smell when used in a bath. Can I add more fragrance oils? Concerned it will create a drying issue by using more. Any suggestions?"

"I made 2 batches of these and left them out 2 days because they were still pretty soft. I just went to package them and noticed they have brown spots in them. Does anyone know what could case that? I left one part white and colored the other part with purple mica. The brown spots only appear on the white part. I'm afraid to use them because I don't know what's causing it. Thank you!"
