Essential Oils Absolutes and Hydrosols - (You Are Here - G805)

Absolutes and Hydrosols are considered natural additives for soaps and cosmetics. Some plants are too delicate for steam distillation and too scarce for mechanical pressing (steam distillation and mechanical pressing are two commonly used methods for extracting essential oils).

To extract oils from delicate plants another longer process is used. The end result of this process is known as an “absolute” which tends to be more complex and concentrated than essential oils. Hydrosols are water-based additives made as a bi-product of steam-distilled essential oils. Both are excellent additives for handmade soaps and cosmetics, and add label appeal to products.

Water Essential Hydrosols

Hydrosols are essential waters that consist of the leftover water from the steam distillation of the plant or herb. They are water soluble and lighter in aroma than an essential oil. They are considered ideal additives to toners, masks, lotions, shampoos and other water soluble cosmetics. They are commonly used as linen and iron spray. Hydrosols can be used directly on the skin without dilution..
