Product: Cosmetics Containing Alpha Hydroxy Acids
Alpha Hydroxy Acids: A class
of chemical compounds that consist
of a carboxylic acid substituted with a hydroxyl group on the adjacent carbon.
Therapeutic Claims: such as treating acne, removing scars, and lightening discolorations are drugs under the law. AHA products making therapeutic claims are considered to be cosmetics that are also drugs.
Usage Limits: The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel concluded that products containing the AHAs glycolic and lactic acid are safe for use by consumers if the AHA concentration is 10 percent or less.
pH Limitations: the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel concluded that products containing the AHAs glycolic and lactic acid are safe for use by consumers if the final product has a pH of 3.5 or greater.
Warning Statement: is required for products that may harm the user. Alpha Hydroxy Acid products must declare the following warning statement: Sunburn Alert: This product contains an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that may increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun and particularly the possibility of sunburn. Use a sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and limit sun exposure while using this product and for a week afterwards.
