Staff Answer You could use glycerin in this but you may have a hard time getting this to emulsify with no water. We have no tested this so we can not say for sure if it would emulsify properly. You would have to test this with you formula.

"I put preservative when I open a bottle of distilled water. My understanding is oil basically doesn't need preservative. What about glycerin? Do I need to put preservative in glycerin, or it doesn't need any preservative (until it's mixed with water)? If glycerin does need preservative, what kind of preservative would work? Thank you."

Staff Answer You do not need to add a preservative to glycerin. Glycerin has a very long shelf-life. You are correct - oils do not need to be preserved but a little vitamin E added will act as an anti-oxidant and help extend the shelf life. Once used, squeezing out excess air from the bottle will also help in addition to storing in a cool area.

"I feel really silly asking this question but here goes. I was making my bug spray and added what I thought was polysorbate 20 when in reality I grabbed the wrong container and added liquid glycerin. My question is should I toss these or just add polysorbate on top of the essential/glycerin mixture. I use 1 oz essential/1 oz polysorbate so there is 1 ounce of glycerin in these 8 oz bottles. Help!"

I decided to pour them all into a measuring cup and let it sit overnight. The essential/glycerin mixture did separate overnight and I was able to syringe the essential oils off of the top and didn't waste them. Thanks for your quick response; I was worried about the sprayer getting clogged, but I did manage to resolve the problem!

16oz is always a lb by weight. As a formulator we always formulate by weight. 1 lb is always 16 oz. Volume is a different type of meadurement.

I asked one of our cold process experts here, and she was concerned that it would cause undesirable results such as heat tunnels, softness, or a dewy film on the soap. I have used this glycerin in CP soap in small amounts mainly for use with mixing colorants. I have used up to a 1/2 oz in about 5 lb oils batch. No issues other than a little sweating durring the first 48 hours of cure. Sweating could be due to the salt I top this recipe with too. I think it adds something nice to the soap, but I wouldnt know about using it in higher amounts. But it could be tried in a small batch to test.

Staff Answer Hi Kheierah, Our glycerin can be used for use in lip products. The FDA considers lip products to be a cosmetic with mucous membrane contact. This is different than ingestible/consumption which are covered by the FDA under their food regulations. Wholesale Supplies Plus is not a certified food repacker which means none of our products can be used for consumption.

"I received my 10 pounds of glycerin and the bottle was cold and had moisture on the outside. Does this need to be refrigerated? I didn't see anything marked saying that it should be."

Staff Answer No, this product does not need to be refrigerated. Our offices and warehouse are located in Ohio and the temperature here is currently 36°F. During the winter months it is common for products such as this one to freeze during shipment. As they reach their final destinations they begin to thaw causing moisture to collect on the outside.

Many of our products are repackaged in a warehouse with other products that are not food grade or safe for consumption. Glycerin is an excellent humectant, which means it draws water to the skin. As a result, it provides wonderful moisturizing qualities to your product without being greasy. It works for all types of skin, as it not oily, but is especially nice for dry skin.
