DIY Lip Balm with Mica Powder: A Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Measure the Lip Balm Base

  • Measure out 1 ounce of the Avocado & Jojoba Lip Balm Base (approximately 2 tablespoons).
Step 2: Melt the Base
  • Melt the base in the microwave for 30 seconds at a time, stirring slowly between intervals until fully melted.
  • Alternatively, use a mini melting pot.
Step 3: Add Flavor Oil
  • Using a pipette, add Sugared Strawberries Flavor Oil to the melted base.
  • For 1 oz of balm:
    • 6 drops = 1%
    • 12 drops = 2%
    • 18 drops = 3%
  • Stir to incorporate.
Step 4: Add Sweetener
  • Add Lip Balm Sweetener using the same process.
  • Use up to 3%; this tutorial uses 2%.
  • Warm the sweetener if it’s solid by microwaving the uncapped bottle for 10-20 seconds or placing it in a hot water bath.
  • Stir until fully incorporated.
Step 5: Add Mica Powder
  • For a hint of shimmer, add lip-safe mica powder.
  • Wondering how much mica to add to lip balm creations? Add 6 scoops (about 1/8 tsp) of mica to 1 ounce of lip balm base.
  • You can use up to 1/4 tsp of mica in lip balm.
Step 6: Mix Thoroughly
  • Stir the base well to ensure all mica is fully incorporated.
Step 7: Fill Lip Balm Tubes
  • Using a clean pipette, slowly fill each lip balm tube to the top.
Step 8: Cool and Set
  • Allow the lip balm to cool completely before capping to prevent condensation.

FAQs About Using Mica in Lip Balm

Will mica powder affect the texture of my lip balm?
Mica powder is very fine and should not significantly affect the texture of your lip balm. However, using too much mica in lip balm can make it feel gritty. It's important to blend the mica thoroughly into the base to ensure a smooth and even consistency in your DIY lip balm with mica powder.

Can I mix different mica colors in my lip balm?
Yes, you can mix different mica colors to create custom shades for your lip balm. Experimenting with various mica powders allows you to develop unique and personalized colors. Start with small amounts of each color, blend them well, and test the mixture until you achieve the desired hue for your DIY lip balm with mica powder.

What are the benefits of using mica powder in lip balm?
Mica powder adds a beautiful, shimmering effect to your lip balm, enhancing its visual appeal. It is a natural mineral that provides a wide range of colors without the need for synthetic dyes. Using mica in lip balm allows for creativity and customization, making your DIY lip balm with mica powder unique and attractive.

Can mica powder change the scent or flavor of my lip balm?
Mica powder itself does not have a scent or flavor, so it will not alter the scent or taste of your lip balm.
