Product Details

Bentonite Clay is one of the best cosmetic clays because it is great for oily skin. Excellent oil absorbing properties. Bentonite Clay is a very soft clay. Great for clay face masks, body masks and facial soaps!

Directions:

DIRECTIONS: Incorporate into formula, amount as desired. Common use levels are 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon per pound of base. If making a face mask, the common use level is 50-75%. Test your final product to insure optimal performance.

STORAGE: Store in an airtight, cool, dark location. When stored properly, best used within 1 year from date of purchase. Keep out of reach from children and pets.

CAUTION: For external use only. Keep out of reach of children and away from eyes. Do not inhale.

"I recently purchased this along with beet root powder in hopes of making a really good face mask that hardens. I have a base oil that contains safflower, vitamin e, avacado, aloe, tea tree, grape seed, coconut, castor, aragan, jojoba oils. I have a base butter of shea, mango, cocoa butters and coconut oil. How should I go about making a mask? Using this clay and the beet root powder as a base? I also have apricot seed powder. "

Staff Answer We have not heard of Bentonite Clay having properties to retain the scent in cold process soaps. Perhaps the product you are referring to is Benzoin Powder. I have used it in CP soap and it does seem to help a bit. I use it at a ratio of 1 tbsp per pound of oils.

Clay as a scent fixative is up for debate in many soap discussions. Bentonite helps as well as most others and does seem to have an effect. I use clays for other properties, but they do seem to help scent hold. Experiment with one tsp to one tb per lb of oil. This clay gives soap a very slick feeling, so keep that in mind.

Staff Answer In our recipes for face masks, we include this in the directions for use: Sit back and relax until mask dries and hardens. Wash off with warm water. Follow with face lotion, if desired.

It depends on your skin type, some people with sensitive skin don't leave it on as long while others with oily skin can leave it on a lot longer. If the mask is thin enough anyone should be able to wear it until it dries.

With most masks, I do about 10 minutes or until dry. Bentonite can be a bit drying and irritating for sensitive skin, so if you are sensitive, consider a patch test, a shorter wearing time, or mix bentonite with a more gentle clay, like kaolin.

I use this without any other clays for my oily skin. It hasn't caused any drying with two to the applications a week. I will say, at full strength, it is a bit harsh on sensitive skin. You may want to mix it with kaolin clay if you plan to sell your masks.

Kaolin clay isn't the best for oily skin because it doesn't have the absorption qualities, so if you are using the bentonite as an additive, replace the kaolin. If the formula of the mask relies solely on the bentonite, consider using it in addition to sea clay, rhassoul mud, etc to help with the possibility of over-drying.

I have made facial masks with bentonite clay and I like to add a little bit of oil or vitamin E. It can be a bit dry and itchy if left on the face for awhile and has strong drawing power on toxins. The oil seems to help with that.

Kaolin is nice to temper the effects of strong, more drawing clays, especially with sensitive skin. If you are afraid of over drying, I would definitely use a portion of kaolin. Take notes and adjust percentage based on how your skin feels.

Staff Answer We used the Bentonite Clay in the Face Mask: Revitalizing recipe. We suggest using 3 tablespoons of water when applying. The result we experienced was that it was not clumpy.

I made the Revitalizing Face Mask (recipe from WSP), mixing the bentonite clay with other clays, and never had any clumps. I use a wisk to mix the ingredients.

Use a little more water next time to get a creamier base. You can also throw in a tiny amount of oil (vitamin E or olive oil is good) to help achieve a smoother, more emmolient consistency with skin beneficial properties. Also keeps the skin from drying out too much when the mask dries.

"Literally harden "

COMMENTS: I sell clay mask though my business and wanted to add a new clay besides the normal clays. Very fine and smooth but once added to my emulsifier mix, it literally harden and I mean hard!!! My stick blender couldnt move. Had to throw away a whole batch and was disappointed as my other clays work well. Not sure if this product is heat sensitive or have to used a certain way however buyer beware!!!

COMMENTS: Purchased this while on sale & am really glad I did! I use Kaolin clay in all my soaps as a scent fixative, but this bentonite clay makes for a wonderful additive as well! Since bentonite is great for oily skin, I formulated it into a CP recipe that will work wonderfully as an acne facial bar! Although one cannot make any claims when selling soaps, I think this one will speak for itself when customers try it! This is an excellent addition to facial bars as well as shaving bars, and I'm glad WSP carries it at such a great price and quality! Will absolutely purchase this clay again!

COMMENTS: I purchased this for a bath bomb recipe and since I already use this in my face masks, I decided to buy. The quality of the product was exceptional. I did not really like the grainy feel that was present on the bottom of my tub the entire time, nor the extra attention I had to give to the light clay sludge line left. Doesn't mean the product itself had any issue, just that for me personally, I will not use in bath bombs. I can continue to use in face masks, bath satchels, soap (maybe?) etc. so you will definitely have a myriad of other uses with this product.

"Awesome clay!"

COMMENTS: I first bought this a few years ago and the only thing I made with it was homemade toothpaste, which I did really like it for. However, this past year I got into making clay masks/facials and discovered how wonderful this clay really is! I love how smooth this clay is. It does take a good amount of mixing, but it completely dissolves into distilled water and becomes almost creamy-like. I blend it with white willow bark and cucumber peel botanical extracts and some essential oils and love the tingle of this mask. It is such a great price that I can offer this at a very low price for customers too! I use the 6 oz low profile container that comes with a lid, and it fits, weight-wise, almost a good 12 ounces of the mask. I have already used over 5 pounds this fall and am glad I bought 25 pounds of it when it was on sale. I know I'll probably be buying 50 pounds of it next time! Thanks for providing such an awesome product at such a great price!

"Love/Hate Relationship!"

COMMENTS: I have a love/hate relationship with this clay! I love the skin benefits and the way it feels in the finished product. For those reasons, it can't be beat, however, getting it there is a pain. This clay is very difficult to disperse to get it to the point of use. It can be done but be ready to put in the work, it is well worth the effort. I have not yet tried this clay in my bombs, but that will be on my to do list.

"Love this in baby powder"

COMMENTS: I use this primarily as an additive in baby powders. It seems to work wonders on diaper rash. I have used it (some) as a face mask, but have not ventured into sharing it that way yet. I like how my face feels after I use a mask, but depending on my skin's mood, I sometimes get some red splotches. My skin is extremely sensitive sometimes.

COMMENTS: When I received it, the bag had burst in transit. There was clay covering the bottom of the box (and eventually on my floor) and on other item in the shipment. I salvaged what I could and transferred what was still in the bag into a large ziploc. I only wish that I would have been home for this delivery as I would have refused it because it was clearly damaged.

"I wish I could like it..."

COMMENTS: I really wish I could like this, but I can't. Unlike other bentonite clays, this just clumps up and feels more like grit than a clay. I had to get creative and only use this around the house while having to purchase another company to make my products POP!

COMMENTS: Makes hard bombs. I occasionally replace Kaolin with Bentonite if I'm making a darker colored bath bomb, as this has a natural gray color which will darken light tones. I've also noticed it's denser than Kaolin so it'd be better to weigh this product rather than using measuring spoons
