Product Details

Our Clear Glycerin Melt and Pour Soap Base is a low sweat & detergent free base. This soap has a creamy lather with 100% of the lather coming from the saponification of natural oils. It has a clarity score of 8.5 out of 10. The 23 pound big block is ideal for larger projects, as it will make (92) 4 oz. bars of soap. Soap comes in a blue bag with twist tie and corrugate box. A single block measures 13 x 11.5 x 6 inches.

Directions:

MELT: Determine amount of melt and pour soap base needed for your project. Carefully slice soap base into small pieces and place in microwave safe container. Heat on low at 30 second intervals. Stir between intervals until liquid. Handle hot soap carefully as it may burn the skin. Soap can also be melted in a double boiler.

MOLD: Stir in cosmetic color, cosmetic scent, and skin safe additives. Pour into a Crafter's Choice mold. Spritz soap surface with rubbing alcohol to remove bubbles. Allow to cool until hard.

ENJOY: Remove from mold and wrap with airtight plastic wrap. Your newly created melt and pour soap is now ready to use!

CAUTION: Melted soap is hot! For ages 15 and older.

"I use clear soap base in a lot of my soaps. Recently, I have been testing embedding toys in the soap. Hard plastic toys seem to do fine, but the soap around foam plastic toys starts to discolor after a month or so. I used a blueberry fragrance oil with no vanilla content. Is the discoloration because of the foam toy? Is there anything I can do to avoid it?"

Staff Answer You can combine any of our Melt & Pour bases to create a new customer base. Blending a clear base such as our Detergent Free Clear with a white base such as our Detergent Free White will result in an opaque base that is more white than clear.

Staff Answer To suspend additves we recommend incorporating additives at 130-135º F. Stir without creating bubbles until soap is 128º F and then pour into molds. Your additives should then remain suspended. If you prefer to work at higher temperatures then we recommend the Crafter's Choice Suspension Soap Base because it has an additive that allows for suspension of additives at higher temperatures.

I have found that items such as toys or erasers suspend better at a temp of 120F or lower. If you try at a higher temp it will usually sink to the bottom. You can also pour a bit and wait for it to set up then add the item and pour over it after a spritz with alcohol.

A lot depends on the weight of the items. Even at the "right" temperature, if your suspension item is heavy, it can sink, or too light and it will float to the top. A good way to avoid that is to do a small pour and let it set, then place your item on top and add another layer of soap to seal it in on heavy items. For light ones, do the reverse - place the item first, cover with a small layer of soap (it will float to the top), then after that sets, fill the remainder of your mold.

COMMENTS: Out of all the bases we use for our melt and pour soaps, this is the one I like the best for finished product. It provides more lather than the others. We have even mixed this base with the others to increase the lather of the bar soaps. The only issue with any of the soap bases is the blue bag that they are poured into. Often times some of the blue plastic bag becomes stuck in the soap and is not detected until after a bar of soap is made and the bar becomes ruined.

"Very nice base"

COMMENTS: I'm really loving being about to offer detergent free products to my customers. This base does take some getting used to, as it's still completely liquid even under 100 degrees. Produces a nice soft loaf for cutting which then transforms into sweat-free harder bars as it sits a cures for a few days. I have no discoloration when using WSP fragrance oils. Holds scent, even essential oils, really well! It is slightly yellow, so not wonderful for making clear bars, but knowing that prevents disappointment. One of my favorites!

"Easy to work with and great lather"

COMMENTS: This detergent free formula was very easy to work with - it stayed liquid for a long time at a low temperature so it was very convenient to add color, scent, and pour into multiple molds. It came out of the molds easily and makes a nice creamy later with a few big bubbles too. It is a little soft, but nothing to worry about and I have had a bar out on my work table for a week with no sweating at all (two days it was very humid and raining out) - so that's fantastic!

COMMENTS: I both the big 40lb slabs in both clear and white. I love the detergent free base they provide. I've found that it doesn't produce glycerin rivers as quickly as some other brands I've used. It worked very well for my latest soaping project. The only thing to be aware of in buying the larger slabs is that it comes in one big block. You'll have to cut away at what you need. I accidentally cut into the blue bag that it comes packaged in when trying to get the amount I needed.

It's good enough that I'm buying more, but I should note that I mix it with another, harder base for results that suit me better. It's fairly easy to manage in the huge block size. Bits of the bag are sometimes caught in the soap, but they pull out easily.

COMMENTS: I love this Detergent Free Soap Base. I have not found a better one yet out there anywhere, so I'm pretty loyal to it. I use it for all my embeds, I don't actually make bars with it, just embeds - and it works fabulously. I never have had any issues with it. When I lived in Florida, we had high humidity. All I did, I made my embeds, then placed them on racks and let them dry with a fan blowing on them overnight. It is low sweat to begin with, but this ensured no "dew" and made them nice and super rock hard. Here in Colorado, well, I don't know...we will see what happens. It's pretty dry here compared to Florida, so I'm hoping I don't see a lot of shrinking or cracking, I will probably avoid using the fan treatment, but I'm looking forward to working with this MP base again for sure.

My bars still experienced glycerin dew. I let them sit out to "cure" for several days and eventually had to wipe off the dew with rubbing alcohol and wrap like normal. Other than that this is a great base and I will continue using it.

"Creamy but not ultra clear"

COMMENTS: I gave this a try since the price of crystal clear has gone up. It is a nice, creamy soap but the clarity on it is so-so. It has quite a bit of clouding to it, so the colors aren't as sharp and bright as I'd like.

"Easy Breezy"

COMMENTS: This stuff is a breeze to work with. Easy to cut chunks off the block and melts super fast. I've been able to attain a great range of colors so far and the fragrances always shine. One word of caution though, this soap will melt quickly in even moderate heat if the sun is hitting it as I found out at a TX open air market today. It wasn't terribly hot (79 degrees when I noticed the melting) and my goatsmilk bars weren't phased in the least by the heat, so be warned to keep this soap at room temperature or below at all times.

"Extremely consistent from batch to batch"

COMMENTS: When I first started to use this soap, my concern was that it would not be as clear as I had hoped, but once cut up and melted down, it is quite clear enough for almost all of my pet soap designs. I'm glad for this, because I prefer the detergent free soap line over all others. It offers plenty of lather to satisfy customers despite the absence of commonly used detergents. I frequently combine this formula with detergent free goat milk formula in my designs, because the clear lathers better than the goat milk formula, and the different opacities are striking. This formula accepts color beautifully whether it is powdered mica, solid bar or stained-glass colors. I also use this in making my activated charcoal soaps. It makes for a less drying soap than traditional charcoal soap.

"Versatile Soap Base"

COMMENTS: I like that it's detergent free. I use a variety of colors and botanical herbs in it, and they all come out nice. The suspension is not sufficient so all the herbs float to the top, but I don't want the additional chemicals in the suspension base. Sometimes the pieces of the blue bag it's packaged in get lodged in the soap. I've informed them of this but they say there is nothing they can do, so make sure you check thoroughly after you cut it.

COMMENTS: Very satisfied with this product. No sweating! And I live in Florida! Lathers very well. Customers love love love the detergent free option I am now able to offer them because of this product. No yellowing, no odor, holds scent incredibly well.
