Texture variation in soap. Kelp contains over 60 minerals and elements, 21 amino acids, simple and complex carbohydrates. It adds texture variation in soap and works as a natural yellow-green colorant. Kelp Powder is commonly used in cold process soap recipes!

"I would like to add kelp powder to my emulsion body sugar scrub. The formulation contains no water, only butters & oils. I would like to use a preservative, preferably paraben free, and I know that it would be taken into the shower. What preservative would be effective against bacteria, fungus & mold - in this type of formulation with the addition of the kelp? Thank you for your help. Kimberly"

Staff Answer Yes, all the natural powders can be added to any liquid soap base in small amounts. Larger amounts may clump and sink to the bottom of your product.

Yes, but be aware that bentonite bind A LOT of water to itself. It will be a very different texture in a shower gel that the same amount of say, kaolin, so it may take a few times to get it right. Don't over do it.

It can, but keep in mind your shower gel will look thicker and be less see through. Just make sure to blend well with a stick or immersion blender so there are no clumps. It's very concentrated, so a little dab'll do ya!

	"Definitely not to my taste"
COMMENTS: I used 1/4 tsp. in a melt and pour batch. I opened the package of Kelp Powder and took a sniff. It smelled similar to alfalfa or other green type things. As soon as I mixed it in the M&P it smelled like fish. The FO was not strong enough to cover it up at all. Luckily most of it sank to the bottom of the loaf and once the loaf was ready to be cut I was able to trim the Kelp off of the bars. There is still a tiny bit of kelp powder in the bars, but the FO is able to cover the smell. I 1/4 tsp in 50 0z of M & P base with 2 oz of FO. If you are going to use the kelp powder use a very small amount and use a very powerful FO. I had no experience with kelp and went off of reviews and by the smell of it in the package.

"Lovely"

COMMENTS: Very good quality. Added to oils before adding lye solution in CP soap. The color was light at first and then came through strong during cure. Smells like seaweed at first and then it fades so that was nice.

"Great for Facials"

COMMENTS: I mixed this with a blend of oils and sheat butter to make a lovely facial. I added a very small amount of tea tree oil. The final scent was lovely, not overly fishy at all. This powder is quite fine and mixed up well. I ended up with a smooth, thin paste when I was done. I'm excited to see what else I can add it too. I will happily buy this again when I run out.

"It smells!"

COMMENTS: I like the benefits of Kelp Powder but, I hate the scent of it. I try to mask it with Lemongrass essential oil or Tea Tree Oil but, it a very strong ocean smell, more like the scent of the things that wash up on the shore. Its a great product but, I wish they could do something about the scent.

COMMENTS: I added kelp to my cold process batch with Lemongrass essential oil. The powder didn't discolor the soap - I used ¼ teaspoon, and allowed the CP bar to keep its natural color. This is a great additive for a CP bar with a strong essential oil (such as Lemongrass) to overpower any potential smell from the kelp.

COMMENTS: I bought this ingredient in order to experiment with color in soap. I wanted to have a whitish bar of soap with a greenish swirl, and the fragrance I had selected for the cold process soad with fresh apple pie. Well, to my surprise I got quite another smell. Yes, this kelp does in fact smell like kelp or dead and drying out seaweed! My husband asked me what I had opened up when I added this ingredient--he smelled it from across the room. Well, I let my soap dry out in the garage rather than in the house because the smell initially persisted. But months later, the dead sea weed smell went away and we were actually able to use this pretty bar of soap.

COMMENTS: This kelp leaves your skin glowing and so refreshed looking. I add this to my face mask as well as soaps and everyone loves it. It of course does have a ocean/seaweed smell to it. It is not unpleasant but not like walking in a garden of flowers either. The amazing skin benefits outweigh the smell. I grew up at the ocean so the smell doesn't really bother me at all. The price is GREAT too!

	"Wonderful Nutrition for the Skin!"
COMMENTS: I put this in a facial masque with other powdered herbs. And, I also make a glycerin facial cleansing bar with this kelp. Wow! It does wonders for your complexion. Try adding lemon or another essential oil to help cover the scent. However, most people don't care if it has a strong scent...because the benefits your skin receive outweigh what it smells like. Try marketing your soap as 100% All-Natural with kelp and essential oil in it and watch it fly off the shelves.
