Staff Answer Most essential oils have very low percentages for lip products so you would need to look at each individual one to know how much to add. Most flavors are added at around 2% but the base can accept more if you feel you need more flavor. Too much flavor oil, though, can make the lip balm bitter. Additional additives should be added at only .5-1% each. Too many additives can make the base softer. You will need to make a few test batches to see what works best.

"I am currently testing to add lip balm to our line. I LOVED this base before I added color and flavor. It had amazing texture and softness and did not at all feel "goopy" or wax like. Staff Answer Yes they are. The Lip Balm Base for Pots is a very gooey product by itself. Adding the base for sticks gives this enough hardness to pour the different colors in so they stay separate. Both bases together create a nice, creamy product.

"I left my personal lip balm stick made from this base in the car in the sun by accident. It did melt, but reformed when it cooled back down. However, the next time I used the lip balm stick, it was extremely grainy and I had to throw it out. Is this something that will always happen if the base is overheated? What about when initially making a batch..if overheated, will the base turn grainy?"

Staff Answer Anytime a product with butters such as shea butter melts and cools slowly it can become grainy. To avoid this grainy feel you can rapidly cool the product in the refrigerator or you can change your recipe to include the ingredient Crafter's Choice Smooth and Creamy Lotion Bar Additive. It is also approved for lip products.

We do not currently carry a lip safe preservative that would be required to preserve any product that contains goat milk. We also do not recommend adding goat milk to a lip product because it will require an emulsifier.

Staff Answer You may certainly use mica sparkles in the lip balm base. The mica does have a tendency to settle. You should pour your lip balms at the lowest possible temperature to help keep the mica suspended throughout the tube. The base does not appear clear in the container but does go on the lips clear. Will the pink sparkle mica will add a nice light pink color to your balm, you would need to add a significant amount to get sparkle on the lips. Please feel free to experiment to see what will work best

Staff Answer Always use the IFRA guidelines for the intended finished product. In other words, if making a solid perfume, you would use the percentage guideline listed for perfume. If you intend to use the Lip Balm Base for lip balms then you would choose a lip safe fragrance and use the guideline percentage indicated for usage on the lip.

Staff Answer How much oil you add will depend on the texture you are looking for. You will have to test this until you reach your desired consistency. Oils that are recommended for Lip products are Coconut Oil, Castor oil, Sweet Almond Oil and Jojoba Oil. There are other oils you can use but these are my favorites.

I use OL1102 from Online Labels. The label is 2.125" by 2.125" with the tamper evident tab. They also have the ones to fit the slim tubes. They have an entire section dedicated to lip balm containers. You can get the labels as matte, glossy, weatherproof or several other options.

Staff Answer Be sure to check the IFRA document of the flavor oil/lip safe fragrance oil that you are using to be sure it is lip safe at the percentage you would like to use. Some flavor oils may only be safe at 0.5% so that is the amount you would use.

Doing the math (2 oz divided by .15 oz) says that this should fill 13 .15 oz lip tubes. But I have found that the tubes can be filled as much as .2 oz. I would say you could get between 9-13 tubes depending on how you fill your tubes!

Hello, I do not see the harm in adding a lip safe butter to this base. I would however make a sample batch with the added butter before incorporating it into your entire base. The rate you should add the additional butter should be based on the total batch weight. I personally would not use more than 5% max, For example if you have the 1 lb or 16oz of WSP's base then the formula would be 16-5% or .80 (which is almost 1 ounce of oil/butter). Taking into account a small amount of waste, a small amount used for testing the completed batch, the addition of flavor/fragrance, etc. I generally yield 125 .15 ounce sticks per 1 lb. of base.
