"I am a beginner and didn’t know that the palm oil needed to melted and stir. There was no direction on the 32 oz bottle I received and have used 11 oz’s of it. Is it still usable or should I throw it out? Also, on the palm oil no stir.... does that have to be melted and stirred also? "

Staff Answer There is a good chance that what you have left will be high in stearic and cause spots in your soap. It would be best to buy more and mix that in with the new batch. The Palm Oil - No Stir is specially made that it does not need to me melted and stirred before use.

Staff Answer Palm Kernel Flakes are partially hydrogenated meaning the fatty acids are manipulated to change the melting point and fatty acid profile. Using the flakes over the oil can cause a bar to be too hard and can speed up trace making it harder to work with if you are new.

Staff Answer Some of the unsaturated fats have been removed from the Palm Oil - No Stir making it more stable. It will not separate and get that oatmeal consistency.

Staff Answer Yes, it is still usable. What happens is that the stearic acid in the oil settles to the bottom. Each time you use, you need to melt the entire bucket and stir it well. Some people will also divide up the oil once melted and place in smaller containers. This way, the oil does not have to be remelted before each use.

Staff Answer You do need to melt the entire bucket before using. Palm Oil contains stearic acid which will settle to the bottom of your bucket. That is why the bucket must be mixed well each time it is used.

"The description of this Palm oil states "Our natural Palm Oil tends to turn a deep orange color when melted". How does this affect the end product in CP soaps? Does it stay orange when emulsified with the lye? Does it throw off your coloring with micas, oxides and such? Trying to decide which one to purchase. I have previously bought from another vendor but they are more expensive and shipping takes 2 weeks. Any information is appreciated!"

Staff Answer They both are derived from palm fruit but from different parts of that fruit. They are both used to harden soap but have different fatty acid compositions. Palm kernel flakes will typically speed up trace in CP soap.

Staff Answer Palm Oil is a liquid but will turn solid when it gets cooler. The bucket will need to be placed in warm water to completely melt the product inside, mixed well, then measured out for your recipe.

Staff Answer Any oil that is added to a liquid soap base is going to decrease the amount of lather and bubbles the product will create. You will need to test your liquid soap with an oil to see how your end product will perform.

Staff Answer Great suggestion. We have tried in the past but it melts and negates the hydrogenated process. Have you had issues with it melting in rout and not staying hydrogenated? All of our palm comes from Round Table members that have pledged sustainable practices. :-)

Staff Answer The diameter of this bucket is about 11 7/8". The best way to remove this product from the container is to scoop it out while is it solid. If you try to heat it there is a possibility of melting the container and because it is such a large quantity, it is much more difficult to manipulate when liquid rather than solid form.

Whether it is refined or not it is still rich in Vitamins E and K, palmitic acid and magnesium. Refining doesn't mean they remove these attributes. Just generally color and smell.

Staff Answer No, they are not interchangeable. The SAP values for the Palm Oil and the Palm Butter Blend are the same, however, each will have a different effect on the qualities of your finished soap.

Palm oil gets solid when cold. During storage or shipping it can be exposed to heat and some of it can melt. Mixing it ensures it is homogeneous before you use. Having said this, I am sure your soap will still be fine.

Palm oil is high in steric acid and when it melts the oils can sometimes separate with denser going to the bottom. It's best to stir every time so the oils are incorporated consistently, otherwise bars can be too soft (or too hard) depending on where you scoop from. It's easy to forget, though. I've begun marking the top of my container in an indelible marker with "STIR ME!" so I don't forget. :) Hope this helps!

Stearic acid is a fatty acid. Most stearic acid on the market is derived from palm, but it is not the same a palm oil. The two are not interchangeable. Stearic is used to thicken lotions, conditioners, etc. In soap, it stabilizes lather.

Staff Answer This may provide a thicker texture, however, the addition of oils to a saponified soap base will decrease the lather significantly. I would recommend a thickener such as xanthan gum.

You could try rebatching. Melt some additional castile soap and stir into your liquid soap mixture. This should thicken it back up into a gel consistency.

Staff Answer The palm oil is in a liquid form when pumped into the buckets. It will turn solid under 76°. What you are describing is the palm oil in a half liquid/half solid state. There is nothing wrong with the product in this state. It will need to be stirred before each use so you will likely warm the container when you go to use it.

Usually palm oil separates so you have to warm it to a liquid consistency and mix it before using. With the 8 lb tubs I usually fill my sink with hot water and let it sit for a while before using so I can mix the contents. Just be sure the lid is on tightly so you don't get water in it.

Don't forget to stir each time before use. The softer part of the oil will separate and rise to the top and the harder part will sink to the bottom. It is especially critical if you are making CP soap, as the bars could be either too soft or way too hard depending on where you scoop the oil from.

I would not recommend using this oil for a massage oil base. Good options for a massage oil base are grape seed, jojoba oil, frationated coconut oil, avocado, sunflower, sweet almond, or any other nut oil.

I stir the bucket of palm oil before measuring, but I melt and solid or semi-solid oils together after measuring. Haven't had a problem. WSP's palm oil is the best.

No, palm oil and palm kernel flakes are not the same. They provide different qualities in your soap.

The short answer is no, you can't. The reason is they are different oils, derived from different parts of the oil palm plant. Palm oil is a high quality filler oil. Palm kernel oil, on the other hand, is a cleansing oil, much like coconut oil. Palm kernel oil can be used in place of, or combined with, coconut oil when formulating your soap recipe.

Staff Answer The bottle is made of HDPE Plastic, and we do not recommend using it in the microwave. The most effective way we have found to melt the oil is to put it in a warm water bath.
