Staff Answer We do not recommend thinning the lotion, but we do have customers who do thin the lotion with distilled water. You can add a small amount along with a preservative to the lotion. We recommend maybe 1-2 tablespoons per pound of lotion. Too much water can break down the emulsion and also inactivate the original preservative in the base. If you do thin the lotion, it is your responsibility to test that the product is properly preserved. Staff Answer To figure out how much to use, you would multiply the size of your batch by the percent of additives you want to add. If you want to add 2% of rose hip seed oil to this base, this is your formula: 16(oz)*0.02(%)=0.32(oz).

Staff Answer Here is how your ingredients should be listed: Water, Glyceryl Stearate, Isopropyl Myristate, Fragrance, Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides, Stearic Acid, Stearyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Alcohol (and) Ceteareth 20, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Dimethicone, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Benzophenone-4, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, DMDM Hydantoin, Triisopropanolamine. Adding more shea butter would not affect where it is listed in the ingredients.

"I understand the max load for this lotion base is 5%. If I add 4% fragrance oil, can I then add 1% Shea Butter (oil) or vitamin E (oil)? My customers absolutely love this lotion, but several have said it doesn’t leave their skin as shiny as they’d like. Just wondering if adding 1% oil would help with this. "

"For some of my fragrances oils, the scent in the lotion seems to fade after sitting for a few weeks. This is at 2% fragrance load. Do you think that if I increased the fragrance load to 3 or 4% that would solve the problem? Or do you think this problem is due to something else? "

Staff Answer You can certainly use the stabilizer you have and see what happens. Try making a small batch of lotion. Keep in mind the lotion can hold up to 5% additives. Unfortunately, discoloration may not happen for a few weeks to know for sure if this will work in your lotion.

Staff Answer This lotion does already contain shea butter. Goat milk powder would be hard to incorporate into a lotion that has already been made. It will likely clump and be hard to blend in. You can add a small amount of manuka honey. Keep in mind the base can take up to 5% additional additives including fragrance before an additional preservative needs to be added.

Staff Answer The lotions are very similar. The main difference is the goat milk and also the Shea Butter lotion is paraben-free. You can mix them but if selling and listing ingredients, it would be very difficult to know how to list the ingredients on your label.

"I have a new bucket of the lotion and so far all of my batches are coming out interesting...... what am I doing wrong? The first batch the fragrance oil settled at the top. I read in the comments that that can happen if you use too much fragrance. I reduced the fragrance significantly and the second batch came out with a little bit of oil settling at the top and it seems airy and curdled. What is happening? HELP!"

Staff Answer We have used a pump top with this lotion and not had any problems. If the pump you are using has a narrow dip tube, that might be why it is not working. You could thin the lotion slightly with distilled water but you would need to add additional preservative if doing this.

Staff Answer If you do not want your product darkening in color, we would recommend using the stabilizer. The directions state if the fragrance has under 10% vanilla, mix the fragrance 2:1. So, if you are adding .50 oz. of fragrance to your product, you would mix this with .25 oz. of stabilizer. If the fragrance has 10% or more, mix the fragrance and stabilizer equally.

Keep in mind that you will have to use a preservative anytime you have water in a formulation. However, Optiphen is both paraben and formaldehyde FREE, so it is great for customers who are conscious of that.

It really depends on the look you are wanting to achieve. If you are wanting it as a tinted moisturizer, I would start with 5% of the total weight and go from there. If you are just adding for aesthetics I would just start with a low amount. You can always add more, but once you have too much, you are out of luck! lol. hope this helps!
