"Both the White Kaolin and the Rose Kaolin Clay say they are "Kaolin", but the Rose is said to absorb oil whereas the White version is said to be safe for sensitive skin. Can you please explain why, when it looks like they are both just "Kaolin"? Thank you! :)"

Staff Answer Both products are Kaolin, just different versions, which is why they have the same INCI. The differences between them come from the different minerals they consist of. This gives them the different properties and colors.

"I've been using this in my bath bombs for strength and hardness and it works great. But I've noticed on the bath bombs that are not colored with any micas and are intended to be white, that they are turning a brownish color. Could this be caused by the kaolin clay? If so, is there anything that I can add that will prevent this from happening?"

Staff Answer It might be the fragrance that is doing this. The kaolin clay should not turn the bath bombs brown. If your fragrance contains vanilla, you might want to use the Vanilla Color Stabilizer for CP soap.

Staff Answer This will not make your MP soap grainy. Mix a small amount of clay into some melted soap. Mix until well blended then add back into the larger melted soap. Average use level is 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon per pound of soap.

Staff Answer Normal usage is up to 1 tablespoon of clay per pound of oils. The clay can be added into a small amount of oils once they are melted. Then, add back into melted oils. You can also add clay in at trace and stick blend until the clay is smooth and without clumps.

Staff Answer Kaolin clay is a hardener that works best in bath fizzies and soap. You can add this to the bath whip to help thicken it. Adding a small amount of MP soap will also help to firm up the bath whip. Adding Bubble Wash Thickener at about 2% to the base will also help.

"The Wholesale Supplies Plus article Getting Started: Coloring Melt & Pour Soap Base says that "You can use clay at 1/2 to 1 teaspoon per pound of MP Soap Base." If that's the recommended usage, then why does the Mens Shave Soap call for 2 tablespoons of Kaolin Clay per 8 ounces of soap? Perhaps it's a typo. To me, two tablespoons per 8 ounces of soap base seems like a lot. What are the correct proportions for using Kaolin in M&P soap?"

"Hi..I have a bag of kaolin that Ive use before for bath bombs with no problem. As of late though, it's making my bath bombs grainy (in the tub). The clay itself looks clean, white and dry - there's no evidence of mold - but when added to a bit of water it's not dissolving, leaving the skin feeling "sandy". Any clue to what's happened?"

I'm having trouble with the crumbles also, since adding 2 new ingredients. Using KC 1t per lb of oils and salt (Himalania Pink) 1t per lb of oils to harden bars. Crumbles.

Staff Answer We have typically have used and have seen kaolin clay being mixed with the dry ingredients. Maybe the softness is a result of other ingredients in the recipe? Salt can attract moisture to bath bombs making them softer or humidity can affect them. Make sure they are not drying near an air conditioner or humidifier.

"How do I make my bath bombs harden with the clay? I purchased kaolin clay to help harden my bath bombs. The bath bombs I make are 2.5 ounces each, and I use 1 tablespoon of this clay per 9 bath bombs. I mold the bath bombs using a meatballer. My bath bombs do not seem to be any harder then they were without the in them clay. Am I suppose to put the clay in a specific order with the ingredients to make this work? "

Staff Answer That all depends on your recipe. If your formula is dry ingredients than yes. If your recipe includes any wet ingredients it becomes more difficult to make in advance. If your recipe includes water you will also need to add a preservative when making ahead.

If you are asking how much clay you can use in 2 lbs of melt and pour I would start with a tablespoon mix well and see how it looks to you. You don't want to put so much clay that it all sinks to the bottom. It's also good to wait for the soap to cool a bit before incorporating clay. Hope I answered the question you were asking :)

One to two tablespoons per pound of melt and pour soap base. Mix first with a small amount of distilled water using a mini mixer. This will prevent clay from clumping in your soap.

Staff Answer I am not familiar with colloidal clay so you will have to test that for yourself. Whether or not the clay stays suspended will also depend on the body wash base you are using. If you are using our Crystal Clear Shower Gel the clay may separate and fall to the bottom. If you are using our Liquid Suspension Soap Base then you should not have any issued with separation.

Clay shouldn't go bad so long as it has been kept dry. If exposed to moisture it can grow mold (as most things can when wet). But so long as it has been stored dry it should pretty much last forever since it is a clay mineral.

Clay absorbs water, so yes, it can make soap batter thicker. Too much can cause soap "drag", unless that's what you're going for. Figuring out how much clay to use to get your desired results can come by adding at different stages during soapmaking.

"There is a huge price difference between the white and rose colors of this clay, but from the descriptions, I can't really decipher the differences in the properties of the clay. Surely there must be more difference in these two products than the color?"

the rose kaolin clay is used only in cosmetics from what ive read. it increases circulation and can also be used to add a silky feel to soaps and lotions. the white kaolin clay is much more versitile and can be used in a wide variety of applications. it does not absorb oil so it is extremely useful for those with dry skin. i would assume the price difference is so great because the white clay is more common than the rose, but i cant say for sure. i hope that helps!

Kaolin Clay's come in several different colors, but they are all made of kaolinite and the mildest of all clay's. The Rose Kaolin is tinted with Iron Oxide (info gathered from the MSDS sheets), which gives a lovely pink/rose tint to products. They are both excellent for sensitive skins. The cost difference may be associated with processing to keep it a consistent Pink as the Iron Oxide can create a red, yellow or orangish tint?

Staff Answer This product is compatible with most cosmetic ingredients so I do not see any reason it could not be used in a scrub or whipped butter.

Certainly, and you probably would not need very much. It will thicken the mixture slightly.

I use this in body butter to give my body butter less of a greasy feel I did use corn starch before I bought this. I also use in cp soap to give it a slick silky feeling.

Glycerin has to be mixed with water to get the best benefits from it, however Aloe vera gel works great to make a mask.

Staff Answer Glycerin does not dry out and harden so the mask will not dry and tighten with glycerin only. It is best to use water which will dry on the face as a mask should.

If your skin is dry, you can definitely add some oil or aloe. It may not harden as much, but a mask does not necessarily have to harden in order for your skin to benefit.

Staff Answer You would only need to add a preservative if you are adding water to your product prior to selling/gifting. If you are making a dry powder mix that is to be blended with water at the time of use you do not need to preserve this your product.

If it is a dry powdered face mask mix you are selling you don't need to preserve the powder. I put on my labels not to let any moisture in the jar, and to keep it in a cool dry place.

I add about 1 tbs per lb and mix with equal parts water and add at trace.

I use 1-3 Tablespoons per pound, depending on which recipe I'm using. At that ratio it's a perfect balance for me.

Kaolin clay is a gentle exfoliant. It does not draw oils from the skin, which makes it great to use on dry or sensitive skin.

Kaolin clay is the mildest of all the clays and also the least absorbent. It is known to gently exfoliate and cleanse skin without drawing out all of the beneficial oils in your skin. This makes it great for all skin types, but especially sensitive, dry or mature skin.

I believe kaolin clay has been used to help purify, nourish, soothe and heal different skin types. It is commonly used as a facial mask since it is chemical free, not to mention the fact that it is cheap than other ingredients. I love that its mild on the skin too.
