Product Details

Formerly known as Germall Plus Liquid. Ashland Chemical is the manufacturer and owner of the trademark Germall Plus Liquid. We have received legal notice that small suppliers may no longer use the brand name of the product. Therefore on 11/20/2017 we have changed the product name as they have requested.

Excellent broad spectrum antimicrobial preservative. No known inactivators. Compatible with virtually all cosmetic ingredients. Good for water based formulas including lotion, body butter, hair care products and scrubs. Not to be used in aerosols. Thick consistency.

This product conforms to the reporting requirements of California Proposition 65 (Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986). We are conforming to the regulation by reporting the existence, or lack thereof, of ingredients deemed reportable by the above mentioned regulations via a Safety Data Sheet (SDS), in Section 15 "Regulatory Information." Ingredients from Natural Food Sources (NFS) and are exempt from reporting in accordance with Title 27, § 25501(a).

Directions:

DIRECTIONS: Slowly stir into liquids at a temperature below 122°F (50°C). Common uses for this product are clear gels 0.1-0.5%, laundry soaps 0.1-0.5%, fabric softeners 0.1-0.5%, dish soaps 0.1-0.5%, lotions and creams 0.1-0.5% and water based formulations 0.1-0.5%. This product preserves foaming washes, high water content formulations and any formulation pH.

TIPS: This product is heat sensitive and should be added at a temperature of 122°F (50°C) or below. The recommended usage rates are provided only as a guideline to proper preservation. All new formulations should be tested to ensure preservative efficacy. This preservative has a thicker consistency and should be measured by weight, as a dropper may be difficult to use.

STORAGE: Store in an airtight, cool, dark location. When stored properly, best used within 1 year from date of purchase.

WARNING: Not approved for lip products. Not to be used in aerosols.

"I'm making a bug spray with EO's, distilled water and witch hazel and a sun spray with EO's, aloe vera liquid, vitamin E and distilled water. Can I use this with a fine mist sprayer? One answer says "sprayers are ok but not pressurized aerosols", and another answer says "not with any sprayers". I've seen contradicting answers in other questions so I'm not sure what the correct, current answer is."

Thanks for your response. I understand that a bar soap would not require preservative, but this one is not a bar soap. It goes into a jar and will be exposed to water in the shower similar to whipped soap and liquid soap. The latter ones need preservative. Would this be safe to use in shaving products? If not, what would you recommend.

Staff Answer Thank you for the explanation. You would need a preservative for this product. The Water Soluble PF would work fine. It is not safe in lip products but this is fine to use in a face product.

Staff Answer Good question! Due to space restrictions in responding, what I can suggest is that you read the 'Overview' tab for each of the products. The main difference is that some are soluble in water only, and others in oil. There are differences with ingredients, what products to use them in, etc... But they are all preservatives.

The difference is that all, but Optiphen Plus contain Parabens. They are a cheap broad spectrum microbial, however they have been tentatively linked to cancer. Other differences are that some preservatives are for oil based recipes such as body butters and lotion bars and some are for recipes that contain water, such as lotions and creams.

The bottles were placed in a zip lock bag, then wrapped in large bubbles, lots of large bubbles before being added to the box. I'm always impressed with large bubble wrapping. In my opinion I think they add more cushion then the small bubbles.

"Love this stuff"

COMMENTS: I used Preservative Water Soluble PF in my Whipped Soap, Whipped Sugar Scrub Soap, Lotion and shower gel. I love that it takes such small amount of this preservative in my products. It mixed in easily and there is no chemical smell in my product from the preservative. I will buy a larger bottle next time.

COMMENTS: I was a little skeptical about this product because I could not get a definitive answer for the ingredients that I wanted to list on my bottles. Yes ,I called and was told that it was a proprietary formula, not too thrilled with that because I knew customers would ask how my EO's stayed blended, and my answer would be "just eo's in this". Actually most people didn't ask so everything worked out fine. I am ordering more !

COMMENTS: I add the recommended amount of this to everything I make that has even a bit of water in it, just in case. I also add it to cosmetics and body products that are paraben-free. Since the trend of paraben-free products has started I have had many items mold or turn prematurely. I trust this, as there is no evidence that parabens cause health problems.

COMMENTS: Anytime I make a product that contains water or may be exposed to water during use, I always use Germall Plus. It work great for water in oil & oil in water formulas plus I can use it in oil based scrubs. The products I use it for are lotion, foaming bath whip, scrubs, & shaving soap. Ohhhh & it also has a wide range for product pH. Just make sure to add it after your product has cooled some since it IA temperature sensitive.

"BEST preservative "

COMMENTS: Wow! I have tried other broad spectrum preservatives but this is SO easy to work with! It's not a difficult process involved with germall plus to add it to your recipe. Other preservatives are so difficult with all the stipulations and you still might have a mess up and it won't even preserve your final product. Also, this has no foul smell that overrides your fragrance or natural scent of your recipe! A little goes such a long way even with the 2oz bottle and the price offered by WSP is incredible. I cannot find germall plus hardly anywhere and if I can I definitely can't for this price.

COMMENTS: This is the first time I've used this preservative and I really love it. It is easy to use in water heavy and oil heavy recipes, which is why I tried it. Worked great. But be sure and check your temperatures before adding it, keep it under 122 degrees, it does not like heat! My first batch was too hot and it ruined it, my batches after that one were under 120 degrees, in the cool down phase, and it performed gorgeously. Incorporated in really smooth. Love it. I like the fact that it can be used in lotions and scrubs, other preservatives you have to use only in oil heavy recipes and have to have a different one to use in water heavy recipes, this is great for both. It is also a non-paraben preservative which is all I will use.

COMMENTS: My customers often prefer to avoid parabens in their lotions. This one requires a lower temp (about 120 degrees)than some other preservatives to avoid breaking it down and making it non-effective. But that is easy to do since I prefer to work at lower temps anyway when I can. Glad I found this at WSP.

"Does what it's supposed to"

COMMENTS: I love this preservative. It is paraben free, which many of my customers like. Germall plus does it's job, and does it well. Remember that is is heat sensitive, so be sure that your product has cooled sufficiently or it won't work. It also is a bit viscous, so be prepared to "lose" a bit to the sides of droppers or pouring containers. That shouldn't deter anybody, though, because it's basically standard fair among preservatives.

COMMENTS: I finally took the plunge into making my own lotions and I really wanted my preservative to be paraben free. Just peace of mind that if a customer does ask or is concerned about it.. that I can say that my lotion doesn't contain any! It's a very thick liquid, though, making it hard to measure the weight and get it all out of the container. But once it's in lotion.. it's perfectly fine. No smell or anything!

COMMENTS: I personally would never make a lotion without a preservative and this is my go to one to use. I love the fact that it's paraben free as it seems to alleviate the anxieties of some customers who are looking for alternatives to more commercially made lotions. I haven't had any issues with spoilage or breaking of emulsion with this preservative and intend to keep using this one for as long as I can.

COMMENTS: I use germall to preserve my goat milk lotions at and use 1/2 h20 and 1/2 milk. Haven't had a problem with spoilage and the shelf life of the lotion seems to be about 6 months...that's pretty amazing considering the amount of milk in the lotion. Like that it's paraben free.

COMMENTS: I did not notice any odor in my lotion due to the Germall Plus which was good. I have had NO problems with any kind of unwanted growth in my lotions when using this product. I made sure I had the correct percentage in my product and all is well. It is doing its job.

COMMENTS: As anyone will tell you.. You MUST preserve your lotions, creams and any water based item.. This is cheap, broad and will keep the molds away. I just don't like the smell tho.
