Honeyquat

Unlike standard humectants that simply draw moisture from the environment, Honeyquat carries a cationic (positive) charge that is attracted to the negatively charged surface of hair strands and skin. This substantivity is suspected to mean that it deposits and stays (even in rinse-off products), delivering conditioning benefits that outlast the wash.

Its low molecular weight allows it to penetrate the hair shaft rather than just sitting on top of it, which is believed to contribute to longer-lasting hydration and conditioning results over time. Studies suggest it may offer roughly twice the moisture-binding capability of glycerin at comparable usage rates.

One practical standout: unlike many conventional conditioning agents, Honeyquat is reported not to reduce the foam of anionic and non-ionic surfactants. That means you can add it to a shampoo formulation without sacrificing lather, something formulators working with conditioning shampoos and 2-in-1 products will appreciate.

Add Honeyquat to the water phase of your formulation before combining phases. It is soluble at 1% in propylene glycol, ammonium myreth sulfate (60%), and cocoamidopropyl betaine. It is not soluble in oils or esters. Always conduct preservative efficacy testing on finished water-based formulations.

A note on scent: Honeyquat may have a mild, slightly vinegar-like smell straight from the bottle. This is normal and is not expected to carry through to your finished product at recommended usage rates.

Is honeyquat the same as glycerin? 

No. Both are humectants, but Honeyquat is a cationic quaternary compound that also deposits a conditioning film on hair and skin. It is believed to offer stronger moisture-binding performance than glycerin, along with the added benefit of improved combability and frizz control, benefits glycerin alone does not provide.

Can honeyquat be used in both rinse-off and leave-on products? 

Yes. It performs well in both applications. For rinse-off products like shampoos and body washes, 0.5%–2.0% is typical. For leave-on applications like conditioners and serums, 1.0%–5.0% is more common.

Does honeyquat work in conditioner bars and shampoo bars? 

Yes, it's a popular addition to solid hair care formats. Add it to the water or liquid component of your bar formula before combining with the solid ingredients.
