"I'm formulating a body wash/shower gel that'll consist of Water, Aloe Vera Juice, Cocamidoproply Betaine, Decyl Glucoside, Glycerin, Xanthan Gum and a few other ingredients. I want to add a carrier oil as well such as mango butter. I understand that I will need some sort of emulsifier to bind the carrier oil with the water and other ingredients. Will Polysorbate 80 work for this or will I need to use something else? If so, should the percentage used be equal to the amount of carrier oil?"

"My after sun spray contains aloe vera liquid, Vit E, distilled water and EO's in a 2oz amber bottle. Would poly 20 or poly 80 be better (I'm not concerned about cloudiness)? From my research, I'm thinking poly 80 would be best because of the alod? My bug spray contains witch hazel, distilled water and EO's in a 2oz amber bottle. Would poly 20 be better? Can I remove my products from the bottles, heat them up a bit and add the poly, or it is too late if they are already made up?"

Staff Answer These should not clog the pump. The polysorbate helps incorporate the fragrance into a water based formula. Polysorbate 20 is better for formulas with little oil while polysorbate 80 is for formula with more oil.

Staff Answer The Polysorbate 80 helps with dispersing the color in the water and keeping the mica from leaving a ring in the tub. It is not required to use it in recipes where you are not using an excessive amount of mica or are not worried about the mica dispearsing well and coloring the water. It basically comes down to preference and performance.

"I have a bath fizz powder recipe that is a total of 52 ounces of base (powder) and uses 12ml of fragrance oil. My customer is wanting her next batch to be red. I was told by someone to use about 1 tablespoon of red lake #40 to achieve the red color, but I am unsure how much poly 80 I should add to prevent staining of the tub and skin. Any suggestions?"

Staff Answer A carrier oil can be used but we recommend small amounts blended into the salts. Too much will make the bathtub very slippery. The amount of Poly 80 should equal the amount of oil being added, including fragrance. Then blend the liquids into your salts. A preservative is not needed. Staff Answer The Polysorbate 80 does tend to bubble slightly. We do not know any way to prevent this. The best way to add to your product is to blend in with the oil in your formula before adding to the water phase. This product can be heated.

Staff Answer The amount of Polysorbate 80 usually matches the amount of oils (fixed, butters or fragrance) in the recipe. This contains 2 ml fragrance oil so that is what would be added. If the product seems wet from adding this, you may need to let the fizzy powder set out on a cookie sheet overnight to dry before packaging.

"Hello! I'm making bath bombs and trying to test my colors in water before I add it to the recipe. I've been trying to mix poly 80 and colorant (micas or lakes) and then just mix it with water to see the effect - but when I do that the poly 80 seems to seize up and create a stiff gel. This has happened when I mix my wet ingredients before hand (and included water) and when I've just added the poly 80 to water. What could be causing that?"

Staff Answer Poly 80 is used for helping to bind oil and water. Lip products do not normally contain water but if needed, this can be added to your lip balm.

Thanks, I was putting it in the body splash base. It seems to have dissolved now and looked ok after about 20 minutes or so.

Staff Answer The purpose of polysorbate 80 is to help oil mix in water. It aids in the rinsing of oil based products. You can add it to bath bombs with SLSA. It should not reduce spinning or bubbling.

"I'm starting to make bath paints, bubble bath playdough, and MP bath crayons using the shower gel base and bubble bath base with bubble up can I use polysorbate 80 in these to prevent stains in the tub and tile(the grout especially) also what type of dyes do you suggest? Most recipes I see a list food coliring. Thanks!!"

Staff Answer We do not recommend using food coloring. We would recommend looking at the recipes we have on our site for these products. Poly 80 is used mainly to help the oils and color disperse in the water rather than sitting on the top or gathering around the edge of the tub.

"I just added powdered dye and poly 80 to my bath bomb recipe to create cool colors. I didn’t have any problem with the dye staining but now my bath bombs fizz very slowly. I added pol 80 in equal parts to the oils but my sodium bicarbonate to citric acid ration remained unchanged (2:1). Will poly 80 slow the fizzing? is There anything else I can do to speed it up?"

Staff Answer Adding any type of liquid can cut down on the fizzing of your bath bombs. Check the amount of oils in your recipe and see if that can be cut back along with the Poly 80. You can also add a bit more citric acid to your recipe. We have also found Shea 50 used in place of Poly 80 still keeps the bath bombs fizzing nicely.

Staff Answer Using Poly 80 will help disperse the oils throughout the bathwater. If using in the shower, though, it really will not help with the oily feel to the bathtub bottom. It should not make your scrub look any different.

"I am making bath salts and are looking for a dry solubilizer for the essential oils, so they wont stay undeluted in the water. Can I mix the EO into dry milk powder and then add it to the bath salt? Will that emulsify the oils in the water? I tried miksing the EO in a carrier oil, but the bath gets very slippery and Im afraid the salts will become hard in the package after a while, like a bath bomb."

Staff Answer You might actually try Slick Fix-Oil Locking Powder. This will hold the fragrance in the dry powder and then release it in the bath water. You can mix the powder with the salts. You can also try Polysorbate 80 which is a dispersing agent.

"I made a salt blend with a butter. Will this help disperse the butter into the water instead of floating on top? If so, at what percent? Since, I have made my test batch. Can this be remixed into the final product for retesting? Thanks."

Staff Answer The Poly 80 will help the butter in your formula blend into the water. It should be mixed in with the oil/butter in equal amounts when making your product. You can try blending into your final product but we cannot be sure how well it will work since it is not added into the product during production.
