"I want to use this in bath salts. Can you please give me clarity on when to add this and also polysorbate 80? Would i combine those 2 and the FO together first, then add and mix that to into the salt mixture and then the mica? Any information on amounts or ratios or guide me to something that does please? As a side note, you have conflicting answers in this Q&A about it being okay to use in bath salts, so maybe clarify that for me too please?"

Staff Answer This can be used in bath salts, yes. Poly 80 would still be necesarry to disperse the ingredients in bath water. All ingredients should be added to the salt, we would recommend adding the liquid ingredients first, then adding color and the tapioca starch!

"In one of your answers you said this tapioca starch is not mean for bath salts. But in the description it says that it is for bath milks. Would it not work with bath salts, if it works with bath milks?"

"Do you not carry Tapioca starch polymethylsilsesquioxane ? The INCI for all of the tapioca variations WSP carries is just tapioca. "

Tapioca Starch Polymethylsilsesquioxane adds a silky feel to lotions and other cosmetics while also taking away the greasy feel in products like body butters and lotion bars.

"I want to try this in my bath salts as I've been having an issue with the fo settling at the bottom of the jar. Do you have a recommendation of how much to use in bath salts to prevent the oil from pooling at the bottom? Also, would I mix the fo with the tapioca starch before adding it to the salts or just dump everything together and mix?"

Staff Answer The recommend usage levels are 1-50%. Tapioca starch is traditionally only used in Milk Baths. We have not tested using tapioca starch in bath salts for the purpose of absorbing the fragrance oil. You alone are responsible for product and recipe testing to ensure compatibility and safety. When performing testing you should start with a lower usage rate and increase until you reach a product consistency you are satisfied with.

"I started using the tapioca starch-modified in my lotion bars but my problem is the product wants to rise to the top as I'm pouring my product into the container. I am continually stirring between filling each container but that doesn't seem to be working. Do you have any suggestions for keeping this from happening? I am using 1% in my formula. You will need to let your lotion cool at least around 110 degreed to 130 degrees. The heat is whats causing the powder to float to the top.

Technically you would be able to substitute pure tapioca starch but you will lose key benefits of the modified tapioca starch such as it being gluten free in addition to the main benefit which WSP lists which is that "modified starch is able to absorb and carry large quantities of oils (such as bath and fragrance oils)".

Staff Answer The Modified is designed to hold oils in dry products which are then released in water. The Pure is used as a talc replacement in products and imparts a smooth, soft feel to formulations. They have different benefits so I would not recommend substituting them.

Modified tapioca starch may either be the Expandex product and contains no gluten, or it is the Azko Nobel product called 'Amaze (formerly Dry-Flow)' and contains Polymethylsilsesquioxane. Because WSP doesn't identify which product they sell, it's probably best to stay with unadulterated tapioca starch, which performs beautifully as its naked self.

"I have been using plain cornstarch in my body butters to cut the greasy feel that some customers don't like, however I've been researching & going to experiment with tapioca starch instead. Because I've found recipes using both, I'm unsure which is the one to purchase for my purpose. I only want it specifically to take away the oily feel of body butter for those that prefer a non-oily lotion type feel, (I don't offer lotion, because I don't use an preservatives.)"
