"I used this in goat's milk soap with a fragrance oil that has a 5% vanillin content at a 2:1 ratio in a slab mold with dividers and only about the top 1/4 inch turned the same dark brown that the same soap turned without the stabilizer. I carefully monitored the temp of the batter and soap and at no point did the temperature go over 65 degrees. Am I doing something wrong or will I always have to plane 1/4 inch off the top?"

Staff Answer It sounds like the fragrance/stabilizer mixture was not fully incorporated. I would try giving the mixture a really good stir and then add to your batter after two minutes.

"Is this supposed to have a strong chemical smell? My melt and pour stabilizer doesn’t smell nearly this strong. I have to use more fragrance oil whenever I use this in bath bombs. "

Staff Answer Glycerin rivers are normally caused by the addition of glycerin or titanium dioxide or the lye concentration being higher than 31%. We have not performed testing to see if our Vanilla Color Stabilizer can contribute to it.

"Hello, I used this VCS in two batches, both accelerated very fast ( Old Spice & Strawberry). I was unable to pour, I had to plop the batter into the mold. I was very disappointed. My batter only registered 37 for hardness ( with scale of 29- 54). Is this normal? "

"I wanted to make a batch of CP soap with Monkey Farts, but as I planned to use white in it I used this stabilizer for the first time (1:2 VS:FO). It never blended with the FO and looked like oil and water, caused gooey mucus-like globs that did blend away as I mixed it into my soap batter, and the reside in my plastic measuring cup was extremely tacky then solidified and I had to just toss it. The soap appears perfectly fine 3 weeks later. Should I expect it to act this way every time? "

Staff Answer It does not seem that you have used too much stabilizer. You did not say how long ago you made this soap and if it is a new recipe. The stabilizer does have a strong odor but this has always faded after the soap has been made. It is possible there might be another ingredient that was used in the soap that could cause an odor.

I used sodium lactate in my lye solution, but I always use it and it’s never caused a problem. I just made this yesterday, and it’s the only different thing I’ve done to my soap. No other additives but I’m wondering if the Bulgarian lavender that was mixed with the FO made a difference in a reaction or that there was no vanilla in the FO and that made the difference. I wasn’t able to find out if there was vanilla in it for sure but it was listed as a fragrance note so I assumed so.

Staff Answer The sodium lactate would not give off an odor. Even if the fragrance did not have vanilla, that would not give the soap an odor. Also, even if the fragrance has a vanilla note, that does not always mean it contains vanilla. We have a few scents with vanilla in the name but have no percentage of vanilla. We would recommend letting the soap cure. As it cures you may find the odor dissipates and the true fragrance/essential oils will come through.

Staff Answer If the fragrance has under 10% vanilla, you mix 2 parts fragrance with 1 part stabilizer. If using 2 oz. fragrance, mix with 1 oz. stabilizer. If the fragrance has 10% or over, mix equal parts of each.

"I just used this CP vanilla stabilizer in a basic batch of CP fragranced with peppermint cream FO. I premixed the stabilizer with the FO and let it sit 2 minutes before adding it to my soap batter. The whole batch immediately turned orange and accelerated. Is it normal for the batter to turn bright orange? I went ahead and poured the batter into the mold but it is very orange. Did I do something wrong? Thanks! "

"In a glass or plastic mixing container, slowly stir 1 part Vanilla Color Stabilizer to 2 parts fragrance oil. When mixing with fragrances with over 10% vanilla, use a 1 to 1 ratio. Stir well and allow to sit for 2 minutes then immediately add to base formula. Mixture best used within 15 minutes of mixing." We hope this information is helpful.

"I used this in my bath truffles & it caused a strange reaction, immediately causing my mix to double in volume and filling my workstation with a very strong chemical smell. There was too much liquid compared to what I normally use so it set off my mix. I'm afraid to try it again after the chemical reaction. Is there a trick to using this in citric/bicarbonate mixes without activating? If I cut down on FO the product won't have as good scent throw. Thank you"

Staff Answer When using this in bath bomb recipes, the amount of fragrance/stabilizer should equal the normal amount of fragrance added. For instance, if your recipe calls for .30 oz. fragrance and your fragrance contains 2% vanilla, you would add .20 oz. fragrance and .10 oz. stabilizer. The stabilizer does have a strong odor which will disappear once mixed into the recipe. You also need to mix your powders immediately after adding as this will cause your mixture to start to fizz.

Staff Answer Stabilizer can turn white and thicken when it is cold. We are not sure if that is what you mean. We have never known it to turn completely solid. "I used this vanilla stabilizer with the snickerdoodle fragrance because I needed a white layer in my CP soap. I mixed white titanium powder with small amount of oil to the "white" batter. It stabilized for the most part but the white layer looks odd. It's hard to describe. Almost looks as if that layer separated or riced although it didn't look that way when I poured it. Did I do something wrong? Any ideas on how to keep this from happening? Thanks."

Staff Answer From what you are describing, this sounds like glycerin rivers, which is common when using Titanium Dioxide. You may want to do some research to find pictures of this to see if this is what your soap looks like. This will also give you some suggestions on how you might prevent this in the future.

Staff Answer Hi Reina - The manufacturer has not provided us with that information, as it is a propriety formula. When used in formulations, it should be mixed with the fragrance and can thus be listed as "fragrance" on your finished product.

"Can this stabilizer spoil? I was only using the smallest bottle, 5ml at a time for bubble cakes. The most recent time I went to use it something did not smell right. I could even smell it through my ventilated mask so I ended up tossing it. I know this should be used in a well ventilated area but I have still never noticed the smell of it before. I'm only asking because I just bought a 16oz. bottle and know that will take a long time to get through."

Staff Answer Our Vanilla Color Stabilizer for CP soap is only recommended for use in CP (Cold Process) soap and products with a high pH of 10-13. Because MP soap have a lower pH range of 7-9 this stabilizer for CP will not work to prevent browning due to vanilla content. Staff Answer Without the use of a stabilizer these will darken over time. In the past we tested all three types of stabilizers with bath fizzies to determine which one stood up to the pH level of a bath fizzie and our testes revealed that the Stabilizer for CP soap worked the best. That is why we chose to use the Vanilla Color Stabilizer for CP in this recipe.

Adding a stabilizer to salts or powdered bath milks may cause a reaction or cause the salts and powders to dissolve creating an undesirable texture. I am afraid that you will need to test this with your formula to ensure compatibility.

"I am using a FO that has a high vanilla content. I used a 1:1 ratio and the stabilizer is not mixing with my FO at all. It separates as soon as I mix it, regardless of how long I stir vigorously. It acts like oil & water! Is this normal or do I have a bad batch of stabilizer? "

Staff Answer Some fragrances to not like to play nice with the stabilizer and will separate. However, once added to a product they blend well and the stabilizer is still able to prevent discoloration.

The use of vanilla color stabilizer may cause certain fragrances that react differently than they would without the use of a stabilizer. There could also be more acceleration with the use of this product simply due to the particular components of an individual recipe.

Staff Answer Our vanilla color stabilizers do have a strong odor out of the bottle. However, we have found that when used in a product with a fragrance oil the smell is not noticeable. You can read the customer reviews for more opinions on this topic.

Staff Answer The Matte White Powder will whiten your soap initially but it will not prevent the color change that occurs with vanilla fragrances. Without the use of a vanilla color stabilizer your soaps will morph to some shade of tan/brown over time depending on the vanilla content of your fragrance.

"Hi, I've recently got into candle making so im looking for the things I need. I noticed it said when a scent has vanilla to add a stabilizer so it doesn't turn brown. Does this apply for candle (scents) that have vanilla in it? and if so which one should i use?"

Try putting a dehumidifier in the space you use. I had this problem before. I only have this problem now if the lab gets humid and only on soap I leave sitting out for a long period. It should not sweat like that. Try putting it in the freezer, fridge to lower the temp. It can also be the fragrance as well.

Staff Answer It really depends on the amount of vanilla in the fragrance oil and the amount of fragrance oil used in the soap. Over the years we have found that fragrances with less than 4% vanilla and 3% or less used in soap, rarely change color when using the stabilizer. We have heard that scents over 8% vanilla content and 6% fragrance used in the formula change after 6-8 months.

It seems to depend a LOT on the specific fragrance. I have tried this with several fragrances that are just not responsive to the stabilizer, even when used to exact specifications and percentages, and have turned off-color or full-on brown within weeks.

If you add a little titanium dioxide to the "white" portion of your soap base, it will help the stabilizer to stick more in the finished product.

If you use a fragrance with a lot of vanillin, say more then 6%, it might not even be worth it to use vanilla stabilizer. Fragrances that are prone to turning dark will "fight" stabilizers and turn yellow instead. That said, I have had luck with vanilla stabilizer keeping colors true for up to a yea on lower volume vanillin fragrances.

No, it is designed to be used with CP soap. Due to the caustic nature of lye solution, the formulation has to withstand higher PHs.

Hello, It sounds as if you may have not mixed the color stabilizer in properly. You should be 1 part stabilizer to two parts fragrance for fragrance oils with under 10% vanilla. Fragrances with 10% or higher of vanilla you want to use it one part stabilizer to one part fragrance oil. WSP recommends letting the mixture sit for two minutes before adding it in to your batch. You should not have to decrease the oils in your recipe at all. Thank you for your question Erin

Try only superfatting to 3% if you use stabilizer. This will help accomodate for the extra oil.

"Hi there, Is there a reason there is a different Vanilla Stabilizer for MP vs CP? I currently use another supplier who is out of stock that only carriers a "generic" one (that I've had no problems with in my CP soap). Staff Answer Hello Adam, Our Vanilla Color Stabilizers are formulated to work at different PH levels. CP has a higher PH than MP. Therefore, the Stabilizer for MP soap will not be able to withstand the effects of the higher PH that occur during the CP process. Thank you for your question.

Staff Answer It gets mixed in with the fragrance just prior to adding to the product. You are modifying the fragrance oil to reduce the effects of vanilla. You are actually compounding a new non-browning fragrance oil with the stabilizer.

Staff Answer Most people then add all of the liquid to the soap. For really strong fragrances, you can add just half. If you find your soap is too soft with the added fluid (maybe due to other additives) then you will need to decrease the amount of fragrance to 3/4 of the fluid.
