"Hi. I would like to make a hyaluronic acid or Vitamin C Serum with the Gentle Face and Baby Cream. Can I use a store brought treatment serum and put the drops of the formula made up already into the 16 oz cream lotion? If possible how much would you suggest since probably it's more concentrated than fragrance? Staff Answer Adding both the fragrance and almond oil at that rate would equal 6%. The total amount that should be added without breaking down the emulsion and preservative system is 5%. You can cut back to 2 teaspoons of the sweet almond oil instead of one tablespoon.

"Is the DMDM Hydantoin in the ingredients a form of formaldehyde? Even though is says baby cream is it safe to use on babies 0-3months ?"

Staff Answer DMDM Hydantoin does release very small amounts of formaldehyde to help prevent bacteria from growing. The FDA has stated this ingredient is safe for use in cosmetics. Anything used on babies under 6 months of age, should be reviewed with a pediatrician.

"I allowed the base and additives to come back to room temp, then placed the lids on their jars. They are sweating around the rim - any idea why? I uncapped them to allow them to dry and I'm noticing any gaps I can see around the jar have what looks like condensation. Could I have capped them too soon? Thanks! "

Staff Answer Even though the lotion may have seemed cool to the touch, it may still have been warm on the inside. This is probably the reason why there is condensation forming on the inside of the jar. With a sterile spoon, stir the lotion in the jars and let completely cool before placing the lids on. Also, wipe down the lids and rims of the jars with alcohol and let dry.

"Since the base cream is rather like jelly we need it to be thinner but not as thin as a lotion. Directions say to heat to 120 and then add additives and let cool. How long does it take to heat a gallon approx? And how long and what temperature to still maintain a thick lotion but not jelly like?"

Staff Answer This lotion is a thinner lotion for the face, we do not think it has a jelly consistency. It is recommended to heat and then add additives because this helps to thin the lotion to make it easier to pour into bottles. It will thicken back up once it has cooled. It is not mandatory that you heat this, though. We cannot give you an amount of time it takes to heat a full gallon. This would depend on how you are heating, microwave, stove top, etc.

If using as a baby cream, though, we recommend either no fragrance or a hydrosol which would be gentler on baby's skin. Be careful not to add more than 5% additional additives as this will dilute the current preservative system.

Staff Answer You can add Vita Burst beads to this lotion base. You might also try adding a hydrosol or botanical extract to the lotion. All of our lotion bases contain some type of oil or butter in them but they are not at all greasy. They are also all water-based.

"I just received 4 buckets of cream and am confused on how to take the lids off. I don't see a ring to tear the seal around the outside. The picture on the top of the lid is not really self explanatory. I see what looks to be a fist with a screw driver. Can you tell me how to open these?"

Staff Answer If you look at the rim that goes around the lid, you will see about 6 holes or slots that are either open or almost see-through. Take a screwdriver and break open the plastic piece underneath that open space. Or, you can use scissors to cut the plastic. Once all the slots have been opened, move the plastic between each slot back and forth until you hear it crack. Then, you should be able to remove the lid. This lid ensures it does not come off during shipping.

Staff Answer We do not carry Benzoyl Perioxide so we cannot comment on that. You can add Tea Tree oil to the lotion. The IFRA Maximum Exposure Level for this oil is 5% so that would be the most you can add for a face cream. Be careful when making claims for acne, this would be considered a drug and would need FDA approval before selling.

"I was reading a customer review of the Gentle Face & Baby Cream where the review stated they use this as a base for an "Eye Cream". Yet I read the MSDS, Section 6, and I am not convinced this should be used around the eyes. Can you please clarify your interpretation of the MSDS with regard to using this near the eyes?"

Staff Answer We do not recommend adding water to a lotion base to thin it out because most people add more that 5% which may break the emulsion of the base and cause separation over time. Also, adding more than 5% water requires additional preservative to prevent bacterial growth. Our Lavender Face Cream uses 3% Lavender Water Hydrosol which is below the allowable 5% liquid additives for our lotion bases.

Staff Answer When adding powders to any lotion base you should first heat a small portion of your lotion then whisk in your powder additive. Next you will then incorporate your mixture into your full batch. The maximum recommended additives any lotion can accept is 6% including fragrance.

I would recommend heating slightly to thin out the lotion to make it easier to pour into bottles. As long as it is not heated over 140°, the lotion will not be compromised. Double boiler method is preferred. A microwave tends to heat unevenly.

Yes it can. Just be sure to list all the ingredients on the label (if selling or giving away). Despite how gentle a product is, some folks still may have specific allergies to an ingredient.

You can use either. It may be easier to get into a jar, since it has a wide mouth opening and the lotion can be thick. But many people will warm the cream slightly and either pour from a glass measuring cup, through a funnel, or by snipping the end of a ziplock baggie off. Hope this helps!
