Product Details

Our Sodium Hydroxide, sometimes called lye, is food grade. It is commonly used to make high quality, handmade soap. Highest quality produced which makes top quality soap. Many People choose to use these flakes because they claim they produce less static!

Directions:

Directions for use depend on application. Do not use at full strength. Always add Sodium Hydroxide to water. Use chemically resistant container and tools. DO NOT ADD WATER TO SODIUM HYDROXIDE AS IT CAN CAUSE A VOLCANO EFFECT.

DANGER: KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. KEEP AWAY FROM PETS. AVOID CONTACT WITH SKIN, EYES, MUCOUS MEMBRANCES, AND CLOTHING. WEAR RUBBER GLOVES WHEN USING THIS PRODUCT.

WARNING: Harmful if inhaled or ingested. Eye and skin irritant. Wear gloves. Lye will burn skin on contact. Use in ventilated areas. Dust may harm lungs if inhaled. If eye or skin contact occurs, flush with water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention.

FIRST AID: EXTERNAL: Flood with water then wash with vinegar. INTERNAL: Drink large quantities of water. Follow with citrus juice, if available. Do not induce vomiting. Call physician immediately. EYES: Flush with water for 15 minutes. Get prompt medical attention.

"Hi, How long will sodium hydroxide last if properly stored? I ordered about 7 bottles on February 2023 which I kept in a cool dark closet, never opened and in the original orange plastic bag from wholesale supplies. I didn’t get to use as intended. I’m wondering if it’s still good, and will it be for a few more years since I don’t make as much soaps as I used to. There’s many different answers both here and the internet. Thank you very much for your help. "

"How would I determine superfat % w/this lye? My "go-to" lye calc calculates the amount of lye needed for a specific superfat % based on the lye being 100% pure. This lye is 98% pure tho, so a lye calc factoring 100% NaOH would be off by a little. Example: a 5% superfat amount using 100% lye would be closer to 7% or 8% (estimated) if that exact same weight were used w/ 98% NaOH instead. Is there a lye calc that takes 98% NaOH into account when calculating superfat %?"

I would recommend freezing at least half of your liquid and adding the lye a lit bit at a time to keep the temperature from rising too quickly. I like to put my pitcher in an ice bath and if the lye gets really hot, to add an ice cube or two. The key is to have patience and to work VERY slowly.

Unless you need to mix a large batch for one recipe I would never recommend mixing ahead of "master batching" lye. It can cause too many problems. It is not safe to have around children, pets, or even adults without proper labelling and once the lye has hit the water (mixing) that is when trouble begins.

Staff Answer Masterbatching lye is quite common for large manufacturers. They key is to store in a safe location that cannot be accessed by pets, children or strangers. We do not recommend it for home based businesses.

You will need an extremely well ventilated area and full protective gear (including mask). Use plastic containers of a grade that does not degrade when in contact with heat or a strong base. Never overfill your containers or mix more than you are comfortable with. Some people like to mix 50/50 with water. I like to mix at recipe strength and bottle in individual batch size. Label and store securely and with extreme caution (if not using right away.

Masterbatching lye is really handy, but I only do it if I'm soaping several times in the same week. Lye can become less effective if it sits too long. Store it in a marked airtight container in a cool place. Use within 7 days.

"sometime when I add the lye to my water and mix, there are still little lye specks/flakes floating in the water after a few minutes of stirring, then I re-do the mixture again after disposing of that one and don't have the same problem...why is that? the lye flakes come out of the same container so why does it fully dissolve sometimes and sometimes it doesn't?"

"I am very disappointed in the flakes. I have only ever used the beads and was very anxious to try the flakes. I make CP soap with goat milk. The goat milk is frozen, and it takes forever to dissolve the lye and some flakes are impossible to dissolve. Any suggestions?"

Try freezing only half or three quarters of the goat's milk. Put the liquid and the frozen milk in together and then add the flakes. The flakes need a little more actual liquid to begin the reaction.

When I melt my goats milk with flakes I put my milk cubes in the bowl and let them sit at room temp until I get it a little slushy. If you give the milk a chance to melt a little bit there should be enough liquid to help the process go quicker

Consider dissolving the flakes in water (at least 50/50) and adding the milk, unfrozen to your base oils, or let your milk melt partially before use.

You take and brake up the flakes into smaller pieces. I find it is easier to measure this way.

I prefer the flakes though they are harder to obtain. The beads and granules tend to stick to the sides of the container you use and they also are harder to measure because they pour so quickly. It's a matter of personal preference but I like flakes.

I have only ever used the flakes, and I have heard so many nightmares about the beads I will not go near them. I am only guessing, but they probably take a bit longer to dissolve than the beads. But, who cares about that when you consider how easy to pour and measure they are! No static, and good control. I am so thrilled that I can get my lye flakes from WSP now. Thank you!!

I've heard that the flakes are MUCH easier to use as they don't hold as much static. Right now I am using beads but can't wait till WSP gets their flakes in and I can buy them here.

Some of the benefits of flakes is there seems to be less "dust". It's a personal preference, but flakes are very easy to use.

The flakes will work the same way as the beads, you will measure the same amounts. I've used both but the flakes and beads but flakes were easier for me to pour and measure.

Flakes are used similarly to pellets - always by weight, in a well ventilated area, with you wearing protective gear. I have not noticed a difference between flakes/pellets for outcome, just be careful to not confuse with potassium hydroxide.

Staff Answer Sodium Hydroxide will react with CO2 in the air, so it can lose it's potency. If stored properly in an airtight container it should last for a very long time.

I try to only order what I will use is a year, but I have used some over five years old. The key is to seal tightly so water cannot get into your container and degrade the lye.

Sodium hydroxide is extremely caustic and would cause chemical burns. Due to the rapid temperature change when it comes in contact with liquid, you have a good chance of getting a heat burn as well. Once in contact, your skin would immediately start to decompose. Bottom line, ALWAYS wear protective clothes, gloves and goggles. Even the most experienced Soaper can make a mistake.

I've read that you can apply vinegar to a lye burn. I'm not sure if it works for major burns but I was splashed with a tiny but of lye water and it seemed to take the itchiness away.

It would create an extremly painful chemical burn ! Don't do it , and be safe when using lye !!!

Staff Answer Touching the flake may not hurt. When water is then added (sweat or when washing your hands) it can cause an extreme chemical burn. It is vital you where protective gloves, long sleeves and clothing.

I would not touch the dry material or the water. It WILL cause a chemical and/or heat burn. Always use goggles, gloves, and protective clothing. Also, the vinegar thing is a myth and SHOULD NEVER be used to neutralize the burn. In fact, the chemical reaction in vinegar will make the lye hotter on your skin and cause a worse burn. The poison control center recommends water and soap. Please be careful when using this product!!

They used to say to use vinager if you got lye on your skin(and many books sadly still say so and thats where may soapers get the Idea) but now it is known that you NEVER and vinager to a lye burn on you (you can still use it to nutralize spills) because the reaction causes extreme heat and will hurt you even worse. Always rinse the effected skin with cool running water for 20 minutes

"I swapped to it. :)"

COMMENTS: This was my first time.using these flakes, and I was happy with my purchase for sure! My first batch of soap with them i had a hard time getting them to start to dissolve, but I only use frozen goats milk in my lye solution. So I struggled with first batch, but decided on my second to melt a.couple of my cubes back down to give the lye something to start with. It was perfect, my stirring time was instantly back to what I was use to, and they dissolved completely. Pouring was a little tedious, towards the end when I only needed 1 or 2 more grams, I dumped more than i should, but easily fixed that by using a spoon to assist in the last flake or two I needed to get out. It's my go to now.

"Love the lack of static; takes a while to dissolve"

COMMENTS: This is great to not have to worry about static with the beads (just use a dryer sheet the first time you open those) but it takes a good 15-30 minutes for all the flakes to dissolve when using 100% ice. Maybe it doesnt take as long with room temp water. Other than that, I really love these flakes. They are also the least expensive supplier I have found out there for smaller quantities.

COMMENTS: This made my soap making so much easier. It dissolves easily in water, both frozen and liquid, and doesn’t clump. I’ve never had lye pockets using this lye. The only thing I would be careful of is making sure to wear a mask over your mouth and nose, especially when getting to the bottom of a container. I wasn’t wearing a mask when I got to the bottom of my first bottle, and the dust got kicked up into the air, right into my face. Other than that, I have no complaints, it gets the job done!

COMMENTS: Unlike many of the soapers here, I've only tried out two lye brands: Wholesale Supplies and my local supermarkets lye. Buying my lye from WSP was cheaper, and the quality does seem better. I really like how it is flakes and not little beads. The bottle is very safe. So safe that I accidentally made the cap hard to open. This is completely my fault for not paying attention when I closed it the last time. The description is true, it does have way less static than other types of lye. However, I noticed the fumes were a lot higher with this lye. This isn't a huge issue, and I believe I'll continue to buy my lye from here.

"Very easy to use - no static!"

COMMENTS: I really like this lye. The product I used before was in a bead form that tended to hang up on the container due to static. The flakes don't do that at all. I was concerned that the flakes might be slow to dissolve, but I did not experience any problem with that at all. There is no difference at all in my hot process soaps or shampoo bars from those made with the lye beads, so I am a happy convert! The container is easy enough to open, considering that it needs to be child-safe and moisture proof.

COMMENTS: I really like this Sodium Hydroxide. I've tried two different brands, both flakes and granules, and this brand does not have the stronger fumes. It dissolves easily and is a 50-50 shot with lint. When there is lint it is very little. I also like that it comes in 2 lb containers. This will be my lye from now on.

COMMENTS: I have tried lye from other suppliers, but WSP has always been consistent and the best! The lye dissolves easily and I never have any problems. I also like that the containers are thick and extra child safe (sometimes i struggle to open it too haha - very safe indeed!). The only problem is sometimes the lye is stuck together in a huge clump, so it's a bit hard to get it out of the container, but besides that this is my go-to lye!

"If you Soap with goats milk, use this!"

COMMENTS: This works so much better than the small powder or beads when you are soaping with real goats milk and trying not to burn it because these flakes take longer to dissolve. I do freeze my milk first, but the powdered lye still acts too fast and I always have to use ice baths, but not with these flakes, it’s a game changer for sure.

COMMENTS: My preferred supplier and product for this necessary ingredient for cold process soap. I've always had great and consistent results and gotten beautiful soap. I like that I don't have static beads flying around everywhere and not much white residue in the water phase as I've had with other products. Do have to be careful about the dust though, especially toward the end of the bottle. I make sure there is plenty of air circulation and wear a mask, gloves & goggles. I always come back to WSP for more when my supply runs low!

COMMENTS: I used to buy lye grains, like even sized pebbles of sand, I saw this stuff & that it claimed not to have static flywaways like the grains do. I thought I'd give it a try. Static did get reduced to almost none, but the only thing I noticed was that the grains used to mix into the water & my lye/water bucket would look empty & clean when all was done & poured out. However, the flakes & water, once I pour it out, later on their is a waxy like white coating or residue on the bucket walls.. I don't know if that is inert ingredients? Perhaps this lye is less pure than the grains I used to buy? Doesn't seem to effect my soap though, my finished soap works good.

"Only WSP Sodium Hydroxide Flakes For My CP Soap"

COMMENTS: I try very hard to create and produce excellent artisan cold process soaps, so I am particular about the raw materials used to make them. I use only WSP sodium hydroxide flakes. The product dissolves readily and completely. This is important to me. I don't experience a lot of flying dust off the product, but regardless, I take all safety precautions when working with this. Another thing I really like is the packaging of this product. The container's locking cap works well to keep this hazardous material contained.

"Poor Shipping Packaging"

COMMENTS: I make hot process soap. This NaOh dissolves easily in water with minimal fumes or boiling/splatter. Using water at 38% in my recipe, I have not been able to get fluid soap. When I used another brand of NaOh with the same recipe it was almost too fluid, so the brand of NaOh does make a difference. The way this was packaged wasn't good. I got 2lb and the entire 32oz container was placed in a ziplock bag that was too small to be closed. There were white flakes in the bag and on the outside of the jar and very likely on the other items I ordered that all came in the same box. As soon as I opened the box and saw this I put on gloves and all my lye gear and doused everything in vinegar and cleaned each item. I wish I could submit an image with my review to show how the loose NaOh ate away the ink on the outside of the bottle. I've since ordered NaOH from other places and the packaging was night and day compared to this. Very unsafe.

COMMENTS: Great price, this totally affects my bottom line, so thanks for making this affordable in a reasonable amount. Just a heads up, some of these "flakes" are more like rocks, so just be sure you're ready for that, could be an issue if you're trying to measure really small batches. I think I was also surprised that there is no protective seal when you open the 2lb canister, it's just a plastic tub with a squeeze top cap. I can see how this might be helping keep the price low and I like not having to worry about lye coated trash, but I worry about moisture getting in over time. Also, I had a lot of issues with shipping so it basically took a month to get to me...I'm guessing that wouldn't happen again, but it's added a lot of pressure for my holiday schedule.

COMMENTS: So first-time soapmaker here! My first batch of soap was made with no colors or fragrance just to test the process, and it came out perfectly! The packaging is nice for the 2lb container because I have younger people in my house and they aren't able to open it. I do wish for a way to get the sodium hydroxide out of the container without making too much dust. I do this outside so as to not contaminate my house, but sometimes the wind changes directions and I end up getting a face full of dust. I do have safety equipment, but it is still a hassle to stop, wash my face, and hands and then continue measuring. In terms of performance in soap though, as I said, I have no complaints.

COMMENTS: This is my first time ever purchasing and using lye. It's packaged in a long (bottled) container and is easy to pour. However, I had a few big chunks of flakes that would've plopped out of the bottle while pouring but I caught it just in time. Just be mindful when pouring to avoid big chunks. I haven't had any issues with mixing, it dissolves well, so I will definitely order again.

Those suckers take an insane amount of time to dissolve. Packaging is wonderful. I appreciate the smaller jars rather than it being packaged in a larger container. COMMENTS: Before purchasing this from WSP I had only used lye beads and the difference between the lye beads and flakes is astounding. It makes clean up of any minor spills way easier since they don't roll. I also noticed that the bars of soap I made with this lye are much harder. I assume this is because of it's purity. I am also a big fan of the child safe container while I store my lye away from children it is still a nice pre-caution.

COMMENTS: I was using lye that was very fine, like tiny beads, when I cam across these lye flakes. The other lye was hard to see if some went on the scale or counter. These are easy to see and easy to work with. I also like the secure packaging. I have small children at home, so having my lye in a secure container is essential. You must squeeze the lid in order to remove the cap. I have had no problems with the quantity of the lye, it consistantly produces high quality soaps. I will only buy this lye!

Sometimes there are a few particles of a white powder (don't remember what it is called) that don't dissolve, but they're not harmful as long as you've mixed well. Strangest thing I noticed was I made goat milk soap with these and it took a really long time to melt the goat's milk. I don't think they made as much contact with the frozen milk and it took a good 5-7 minutes to get it to thaw.

COMMENTS: I really like this product due to the fact that it is in a flake form and not A fine grain, I find the find green tends to powder and it floats in the air. With the flakes you're avoiding such things as dust floating up to your nose. I use this to make my hot process soap, cold process soap, melt and pour soap, cold process oven process soap and have had success each time and very happy with the results. I highly recommend this purchase not only is the packaging safety locking cap that's childproof the item came shipped very well capped on the bottom and top and wrap with tape and the convenience of it being in a flake form is priceless, speaking of prices, the price for this item is extremely reasonable! COMMENTS: This was my first time trying the lye from this site. I'm overall satisfied with the quality It did exactly what I needed it to do. It dissolved clear with a few swirls of the spoon. There was no lye lint. I enjoy the fact I didn't have to strain out any impurities or have the worry of did all my lye make it into my oils. The big flakes make it so much easier to measure out. There isn't that static dust I've experienced using the beads. Plus the size and shape of the container made it just that much more easier to work with.

"Very happy I switched."

COMMENTS: I previously bought from another soap supplies company for years. After the last few bottles arrived with large clumps (micro bead type) and several soap batches failing, I gave this a try. Honestly I'm extremely happy I switched. I find it's much easier to measure and handle the larger flake form, especially with our naturally humid weather conditions. "Love the product - not the container"

COMMENTS: I have problems with hand strength and found it impossible to open the container as instructed...I do not have enough grip strength to squeeze the top to get the lid to turn. Ended up using a couple of kitchen tools to bend the lid wider so that I could turn it off. Loved how the lye dissolved however it felt rather dangerous having to pry the lid open. I am undecided if I will order this product again. Great price but it's container makes it a safety hazard for me.

COMMENTS: As someone who has only used lye beads my entire soaping life, I went into this purchase a little sceptical, but I've been converted! These flakes are AWESOME!!! No powdery residue, no static (and my biggest struggle living in FL), NO STICKING!!! It's so humid here that the beads always pulled the moisture from the air faster than I could get it weighed out & added to my liquid, but I had ZERO problems with that with the flakes! I found these flakes to be easier & faster to dissolve in my liquid as well! Yes, there IS a difference & after using beads for years, these flakes put them to shame! I have 2lbs of the bead-type lye left over from a previous purchase, but after using the flakes, I don't want to go back! I really thought I wasn't going to like this type of lye, to be completely truthful, but the price was great, so I decided I'd give it a try. I can honestly say I don't think I'll ever go back to using beads again! This lye is just all around easier in every aspect! So glad I decided to give it a shot!

"Best Lye Ever"

COMMENTS: This was my first time using flakes. I thought they would be powdery, but they're not! The "flakes" are more like little crystal chunks, and are super easy to handle. They come out of the container very easy. I was stoked. Additionally, there was not powder or mess in doing so. They take a few extra seconds of stirring to fully dissolve, but that's neither here nor there. A HUGE difference for me was the fumes were next to none when put in water. In the past, I used a lye powder and the fumes were intolerable, even with proper ventilation and space. Plus, 2lbs for the price, can't be beat by anywhere else. Excellent product. Very happy.

COMMENTS: Usually I use sodium hydroxide from the hardware store, but I thought I'd try your brand based on reviews and I'm so glad I did! The packaging and delivery were excellent, it desolved much better in both distilled water and goat's milk, and I didn't have little crystals bouncing all over the place as I was measuring. It is very convenient and easy as pie to use. I don't plan on using any other brand from now on.

COMMENTS: I like the idea that it is food grade, mostly I use it for CP but on the very rare occasion that I make pretzels, I could use it to make a weak dipping solution before baking to get that rich, golden brown color. But most of all, love, love that fact that it comes in large flakes that are not static-y (is there such a word?) which makes measuring much easier. Good stuff!

"Crafters Choice™ Sodium Hydroxide Flakes "

COMMENTS: This is top quality lye. It dissolved quickly and very well for me. I love using the flakes more than the beads because thy don't roll all over the counter if spilled. The only complaint that I have is the lid. I'm petite and have small hands and could barely get the lid off. I couldn't squeeze the sides together hard enough to get the lid off, so I had to use two butter knives to pull open the knobs while I twisted the lid. It was really frustrating. I thought I was going to have to find a neighbor who is a man and ask for help. Thankfully, the butter knives worked! Another problem I have is also with the lid. I can't put it all the way back on now or I'll have the same problem getting it off. I have the lid on loosely and I'm keeping it in the plastic bag it came in to keep it contained.

COMMENTS: Good quality sodium hydroxide in easy to handle containers... not much else to say about it along those lines. Where this product really shines is that it is in flakes (similar to Potassium Hydroxide) instead of the usual tiny beads. The flakes are much easier to pour without leaving tiny beads of lye left on the inside of your measuring container. The heavier flakes are also not as affected by static as the beads are, so there's less potential for dangerous mess. Well worth the slightly higher cost, in my opinion.

COMMENTS: Until now, I had always used lye that was more in a bead form and constantly had problems with the little beads "jumping" due to static, even when I rubbed the bottles down with a dryer sheet first. So I thought I'd try these flakes and I will never be using the beads again! These pour so much more easily, there aren't little microbeads jumping or falling from the rim of the bottle. And then when I added these lye flakes to my distilled water, the lye dissolved almost instantly - no rock hard lump at the bottom of the water, no little floaty things I had to strain out. Great product!

"Great Product, Safe Packaging"

COMMENTS: I've used powdered lye, which was okay. I used beaded lye for a while, but hated how static would sometimes build up and beads flew all over the room (NOT SAFE). I'm glad I found this Crafter's Choice lye, because the flakes are exactly what I've been looking for! Easy to pour and measure. Child- and Pet-safe packaging. Dissolves well in liquid, although you do need to stir it for a few seconds. Very pure lye, no funky stuff at the bottom of the container when you mix it with water. Dissolves completely. This is the go-to brand of lye for me now!

"way better than the powder/ pellets "

COMMENTS: I am new to soaping and just assumed that sodium hydroxide came in one form... boy was I wrong. My first order was from a different company (I was just learning and didnt know about WSP). I ordered a very large amount of lye, so for the last year or so I had been soaping with the pellet form. I recently ordered the flake form and i was surprised at how much easier it was to work with. And no worrying about getting the smallest of tiny little speck of dust on the counter and the possibility of the dog licking it or someone accidentally wiping their hand across it. Although I still take extreme caution when using the product I fell a little more at ease using the flakes. I will be purchasing only flakes in the future.

COMMENTS: I have always used the lye beads and I didn't think it would make a difference in what kind of lye that I used, I understand one is in the flake form, and the other one isn't but in terms of how my soap would come out, I thought it would be pretty much the same, but boy oh boy I was wrong. I don't remember reading any reviews were it mentioned the creamiest that this lye gives to your bars, but that is what I have experienced with using this lye. My bars are so thick and creamy, almost like frosting. I wish their was a place on here I could show you my bars of soap. They feel so silky, and almost feel like baby powder, I can not stop touching my soap. LOL I am so in love with WSP flakes, I only wish it was a bit cheaper, because I can not afford the price. I will only order this when it is on sale, or I have extra cash. I don't want to have to go back to using the beads, they are messy, they bounce all over the place, leaving dangerous lye around and you don't want your family coming in contact with lye. I get nervous even after I've cleaned up, wondering did I clean all the unseen beads that probably could have bounced on the floor. Using this product sure made a world of difference.

COMMENTS: I will NEVER go back to beads. Ever. (Unless the flakes disappear or go up in a ridiculous price range or they change them to something as hideous as the beads.) I read a ton of these reviews before purchasing. I did not find any problem with these flakes dissolving. In fact, I found they dissolve just as well if not better than the beads. They do not fly around. There is a sort of dust but I wear a mask and it seems to be a "heavy" dust for lack of the better term at this moment. You will not regret buying these flakes. Ever.

"I cannot say enough about these flakes!"

COMMENTS: I purchased the flakes from WSP and used a different vendor for regular beaded sodium hydroxide, to just try the two out. THERE IS NO COMPARISON! You pay a little more, but it is totally worth it. No bouncing beads of lye with these flakes, which makes it a favorite. I just open the container, pour and voila. It stays where I put it. After dealing with "jumping tiny granules" of lye from the other place, I've made up my mind- only NaOh FLAKES for me!

"BETTER THAN BEADS"

COMMENTS: I like that fact that there are flakes and not the beads which were so light every time I tried to measure them as they flowed out of the jar they would migrate and float evrywhere. The flakes have enough weight that they will not leave little surprises all over the counter.The top has a twist lock that prevents accidental spills also. I appreciate WSP being smarter than I am and konwing what I need before I needed it!

"Easier than I thought"

COMMENTS: I bought this never having used lye before. In fact, I stuck with M&P because I didn't want to work with toxic chemicals. Then I got to thinking that if I could control what products went into my soap, I could add soaps to my line as I desired. The flakes are easy to work with, and after making my first batch of CP, I must say that I am just as addicted to CP as I am to MP. Definitely will buy again.

COMMENTS: I'm on the fence about this product as I am not sure if I prefer the flakes over the pellets. There is a substantial price difference, but I don't think that the quality is any better than what I have been using. I'm just not sure, however this product was very easy to use; the large flakes makes for easier measuring. I did find that there was more fumes associated with this product, but I'm not sure why this is.

COMMENTS: This lye is FANTASTIC. The flakes are large, larger than the brand I used before. I love this because it does NOT clump at all when the humidity or weather changes. It came packaged safely and nicely, the openings on the jars are large enough to pour accurately and not spill all over the place. These larger flakes pour directly where you want them and because they are larger there is less lye dust. A great product, easy and safer to use than pearls!

COMMENTS: I love everything about this lye. Not only is it food grade but I love the bottle it comes in and also that it comes in flakes. It is easy to pour out of the bottle to weigh. It desolves nicely in my cold processing goat milk soap. I desolve it directly into my goat milk with no problem. You do need to stir well to make sure all flakes are dissolved. My soaps are turning out great.

"So much better than pellets"

COMMENTS: Thank you WSP for this product. When you have pets and you have to make products in the same area where they eat, dealing with lye is a concern. I've used powders and pellets before and they go everywhere. I was always wondering if I got everything up after measuring and mixing. Now I don't have to worry anymore. These measure up better, easier to see if you drop any. Love it.

"Used to be my preferred lye supplier..."

COMMENTS: I really like the flake sodium hydroxide. Used to be able to get 8lbs from WSP for around $26 but then they stopped selling it bulk which was disappointing. I continued to purchase as it is nice lye until I started getting batches with strange debris. I have started purchasing my lye elsewhere due to the inconsistency in quality and the more than doubling of price. This has been by far the most expensive I have found.

	"Lye flake disaster"
COMMENTS: I made several batches of our CP soap with this product and ended up with undissolved lye issues in every batch. I prefer granule lye over flakes and definitely learned the hard way on this one. Perhaps I did something wrong, but I find the flake to be harder to handle/measure. If your a new soap maker, watch carefully to make sure it has completely dissolved, I make goat milk soap and soap with lye/milk mixture at 80-100°.

"Great price, wish it was granulated"

COMMENTS: I love the idea of flake lye because you don't get the tiny granules bouncing everywhere and sticking to things, but...I've found it just doesn't dissolve well into frozen goat milk. I end up with large flakes in the bottom of my lye pot that just won't dissolve. I am sure it's just the cooler temperature that is required to dissolve lye into milk, but sadly can't use this. Now if you all sold sodium hydroxide in granulated as well, you'd have a steady order from me!

"Okay, but not my favorite"

COMMENTS: Flakes leave a film when combined with both distilled and spring water, they also produce more odor than lye crystals. They dissolve okay, but I only add a small amount at a time. Still produced good CP soap, I did have more incidents of soda ash with this lye, with both new and previously used recipes.

"Poor packaging"

COMMENTS: I hate leaving bad reviews, but I get 1-2 good 3lb batches out of one of these containers then the rest of the batches flop. I asked a question about suggested storage and WSP assured me the containers are airtight. No matter how tight I seal it, the majority of the lye fails after I open the container. Unfortunately, I have 4 containers left so I am going to find airtight containers for it once I open. I will most likely be sourcing my lye elsewhere from now on as I cannot afford to waste supplies. I think the lye is fine, just maybe place the lye in a different airtight container after opening.

	"Top is much to hard to open"
COMMENTS: I've been using lye from various companies for over 10 years. I recently purchased these flakes type of lye. For the life of me I cannot get the containers to open. Having never had this problem before this purchase I'm hard pressed to understand why the tops are so tight I cannot squeeze the top twisted enough to get it past past the little stopper things. Disappointed.

COMMENTS: I finally gave this a try. This lye is flakes instead of crystals. It does the job just fine but seems to take a lot longer to dissolve in the water or liquids I use. I personally think i prefer the crystals better.
