Lip Balm Recipe: How to Formulate a Basic Lip Balm

Understanding the Basics of Lip Balm Formulation

This tutorial will guide you through creating a recipe for lip balm from scratch. By understanding a basic formula, you can develop custom lip balms tailored to your preferences.

Essential Ingredients for a Basic Lip Balm Recipe

Supplies and Equipment Needed:

Step-by-Step Instructions: How to Make Lip Balm

Step 1: Measure Ingredients
Weigh out all ingredients ahead of time. Place a glass container on the digital scale, tare it, and measure each ingredient.
For 2 ounces of lip balm base:
  • 0.40 oz Beeswax (20%)
  • 0.30 oz Coconut oil (15%)
  • 0.20 oz Shea butter (10%)
  • 0.30 oz Cocoa butter (15%)
  • 0.80 oz Sweet almond oil (40%)
Step 2: Melt the Ingredients
Add the beeswax, cocoa butter, coconut oil, and shea butter to a microwave-safe container.

Step 3: Heat the Mixture
Slowly melt the wax and butters in the microwave in 30-second intervals. Stir between intervals to allow natural melting. If using a mini-melting pot, add the ingredients and follow the same process.

Step 4: Add Liquid Oils
When halfway melted, add sweet almond oil and repeat Step 3. Stir until the remaining wax and butters melt naturally.

Step 5: Cool Slightly
Let the base cool slightly before adding flavor oil.

Step 6: Flavoring and Sweetening
Add Malted Milk Balls flavor oil using a pipette, starting with 1% and adjusting up to 3% as needed. Add 2% sweetener to the base, with the option to increase up to 3%. Stir until fully incorporated.

For 2 oz of balm:
  • 12 drops = 1%
  • 24 drops = 2%
  • 36 drops = 3%
Test the flavor and sweetness by dropping a small amount on your palm and applying it to your lips.

Step 7: Add Color
Add lip-safe micas for shimmer. Mix 8 scoops of Sienna Fine and 4 scoops of 24 Karat Gold (about 1/4 tsp). You can add up to 1/4 tsp per ounce of base.

Step 8: Mix Thoroughly
Stir the base well to ensure the mica is evenly distributed.

Step 9: Fill Lip Balm Tubes
Using a clean pipette, fill each tube to the top. Two ounces of base will fill about 10 lip balm tubes.

Step 10: Allow to Set
Let the lip balm set and cool completely before capping.

Tips for Customizing Your Lip Balm Recipe

  • Adjust Hardness: For a harder lip balm, increase the beeswax and reduce the butters. For a softer lip balm, do the opposite.
  • Add Shine: Add a little castor oil for extra shine and slickness.
  • Experiment: Take good notes on your adjustments to replicate successful recipes.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lip Balm Recipes

How Can I Adjust the Consistency of My Lip Balm?
Adjust the ratio of beeswax to butters and oils. More beeswax will make the balm harder, while more oils will make it softer.

What Is the Best Way to Add Flavor to My Lip Balm?
Use high-quality flavor oils specifically designed for lip balms. Start with 1% of the total base and increase up to 3% based on your preference.

How Do I Add Color to My Lip Balm?
Add lip-safe micas to the melted base. Stir thoroughly to ensure even distribution. Up to 1/4 tsp of mica per ounce of base is recommended for a subtle shimmer.

Can I Use a Different Oil Instead of Sweet Almond Oil?
Yes, you can substitute sweet almond oil with other liquid oils like jojoba oil, avocado oil, or olive oil, depending on your preference and the properties you desire in your lip balm.

How Do I Prevent Overheating the Ingredients?
Melt the ingredients slowly, in short intervals, and stir frequently. Natural heat will melt the remaining solids without overheating the base.

By following these instructions and customizing your ingredients, you can create a unique and high-quality lip balm tailored to your preferences. Enjoy the process of experimenting and finding your perfect formula!
