Sometimes choosing a melt & pour soap base is the hardest part of getting started. With so many options (31 to be exact) it can be overwhelming to know which soap base is best for the recipe you want to create. 

Earlier this month we discussed the growing popularity of white chocolate based fragrances and shared our scent trend forecast for Spring 2016. This week we are continuing our discussion but focusing specifically on blending white chocolate fragrance with fresh raspberry scents. Gourmand, or food inspired fragrance families are often used in lip balms, bubble bars, bath cookies, hand lotions, body creams, and hand and body soaps with food inspired designs, such as cupcakes, truffles, cakes and pie soaps. Many of these handmade, food inspired soaps and bath and body products are not complete without a thick layer of soap frosting. A bath bomb is a hard-packed mixture of chemicals which effervesces when wet. They are used to add scent and color to bathwater. They are also called bath fizzies or bath snowballs. Make bath time a special occasion, not a boring ritual, by enjoying the fragrant bliss and silky skin of a bath bomb!Items Needed:A large bowlWooden spoonBath Bomb moldsRubber glovesA spray bottle of either witch hazel or rubbing alcoholIngredients:1 pound of Bath Fizzy Base1 Tablespoon of body safe fragrance oil Prepare the Fizzy Base: Place the Bath Fizzy Base into a large bowl. Mix with your hands to break up any clumps. Add body-safe fragrance oil and mix thoroughly. Moisten the Mix: Using a spray bottle, spritz the mixture about 4 times. Continue to mix, spraying as needed, until the mixture reaches a dry, Play Dough-like texture. Pack the Molds: Pack each side of your bath bomb mold, ensuring they are slightly overfilled. Press the two sides together using a gentle push/slide motion until they meet. Avoid twisting or pressing too hard to prevent the mold from cracking. Carefully remove one side of the mold, then the other. Dry the Bath Bombs:Place the bath bombs on a towel-covered cookie sheet and let them air dry for at least 24 hours. Finish and Store:Once completely dry, package the bath bombs in craft bags and secure with metallic twist ties. Optional Add-ins:Consider adding body-safe colorant, colored glitter, Dead Sea salts, poppy seeds, jojoba beads, dried flowers, or melted soap for extra flair. 1. Achieving the Perfect Texture: The key to a successful recipe for bath fizzies is finding the right balance of moisture in your fizzy base. If your mix is too dry, the bath bombs might crumble when unmolded. On the other hand, too much moisture can cause them to expand prematurely. To avoid these issues, spritz your mix gradually and check the texture often. You're aiming for a dry, Play Dough-like consistency that holds together when pressed but doesn't feel wet.2. Customizing Your Bath Fizzies: One of the best things about making bath fizzies is the ability to customize them. Experiment with different body-safe fragrance oils to create unique scents, or add natural colorants to give your bath bombs a pop of color. You can also incorporate dried flowers, glitter, or salts into the fizzy base for added texture and visual appeal. Just be mindful of how these extras might affect the final texture and performance of your bath fizzies.3. Troubleshooting Common Issues: If your bath fizzies are crumbling or cracking, it could be due to an uneven mix or not enough moisture. Reevaluate your spraying and mixing technique to ensure consistency. If the bath bombs are expanding or fizzing too early, it's likely that too much water was added during the mixing process. Reduce the amount of spritzing and mix thoroughly after each addition to control moisture levels. How do you make bath fizzies without them crumbling?To prevent bath fizzies from crumbling, ensure that your fizzy base has the right texture. Gradually add moisture with a spray bottle and mix thoroughly until the mixture resembles dry Play Dough. This texture allows the bath fizzies to hold their shape during molding and drying.How do you make bath fizzies more colorful without staining the tub?To add color to your bath fizzies without staining, use water-soluble dyes or mica powders in your recipe for bath fizzies. These ingredients disperse easily in water and won't leave residue in the tub. Always test a small amount in water first to ensure it doesn't stain before using it in your entire batch.Why are my bath fizzies expanding before they dry?If your bath fizzies are expanding before they dry, it's likely due to too much moisture in the fizzy base. Reduce the amount of water or liquid in your recipe, and be sure to spritz lightly and mix thoroughly. The mixture should be just moist enough to hold its shape without activating the fizz prematurely.Can I add essential oils to my bath fizzies?Yes, essential oils can be added to your bath fizzies for a natural scent. However, be mindful of the quantity—essential oils are potent, and a little goes a long way. Typically, 1-2% of the total weight of the fizzy base should be sufficient for a pleasant fragrance without overpowering the bath experience.
