Glycol Distearate (EGDS) is a natural, easy-to-use pearlizing agent, emollient, and opacifier. EGDS will contribute body, opacity and a soft velvety feel to water-based formulations. It can even add viscosity at higher usage levels.
EGDS is a natural product made by reacting triple pressed-stearic acid with EG to make a mixture of esters. Its effectiveness as an opacifier and pearlizing agent is due to it being practically insoluble in water based formulas.
Specifications: Appearance: White Pellets
Odor: Mild Fatty Odor
Solubility in Water: Insoluble in Water
Melting Point: 143 °F
Shelf Life: 12 months
International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI): Glycol Distearate
Common Name Ingredient Listing (FDA Approved): Glycol Distearate
Directions:
Usage rate: 1 - 2% in creams and lotions, 0.5 - 2.5% in shampoos and body washes to add pearlescence.
Heat batch to 70 - 75 °C (167 °F) until the glycol distearate is completely melted. Cool to room temperature with continuous agitation. If glycol distearate usage is at too high a level, excessive opacity will diminish the pearlescent effect. If incorporated at too low a level, solubilization by surfactants can result in either no pearlescence or delayed and excessively temperature-sensitive pearlescence (resulting in product that is, or becomes, hazy or murky).
