The Chemistry behind Alcohol and MP Soap

Article

The Chemistry behind Alcohol and MP Soap
Because the chemistry of Cold Process (CP) soap is delightfully complex, I have spent many happy hours devising experiments to answer questions and solve problems for those who make CP soap. Makers of Melt and Pour (MP) soap, however, face problems different from those I have investigated before. For example, while CP and MP soaps can be poured in layers, CP layers are usually at the same temperature and in the same state (liquid). But a hot, liquid MP layer is usually poured on top of a cold, solid MP layer, and because of these differences, the joint between layers may not be strong. Additionally, transparent soap is much more common in the MP world than it is in the CP one, and so bubbles and blemishes within a transparent layer must be minimized.

Waiting For A Cure: Is It Worth The Weight?
In advice to a Young Tradesman (1748), Benjamin Franklin penned the oft-repeated proverb, “Time is Money.” His father, Josiah Franklin, was a maker of candles and soap, and young Ben was brought up in that trade. All That Glycerol

Article

All That Glycerol
Glycerin has been a part of soapmaking from the beginning, but it was not recognized as a substance separate from soap until the early nineteenth century. Michel Eugene Chevreul discovered that soap is not simply a mixture of alkali and fat, but rather a collection of compounds that result from the reaction of alkali with fat. He found that when fats and oils are turned to soap, they produce a sweet tasting byproduct, which he named glycerin.
Sample Vial Testing

Article

Sample Vial Testing
Testing small batches with sample vials is crucial before committing to using a particular fragrance in larger product quantities. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to proceed: Measure Your Base Product: Start with a fixed amount of the base product. For example, if you are testing a fragrance with soap, measure exactly 1 ounce of the soap base. Calculate the Fragrance Percentage: Decide on the percentage of fragrance oil you want to test. Common percentages range from 1% to 3%. For a 1% addition: Multiply the base amount by 0.01. For 1 ounce of base, this equals 0.01 ounces of fragrance, approximately 11 drops or 0.28 grams. For a 2% addition: Use 0.02 ounces for 1 ounce of base, which equals about 22 drops or 0.56 grams. For a 3% addition, Use 0.03 ounces for 1 ounce of base, which is roughly 33 drops or 0.85 grams. Adding the Fragrance: Accurately add the calculated amount of fragrance to your base. It is generally recommended to use a precision scale for measuring by weight to ensure accuracy, especially since the density of oils can vary. Mix and Test: Thoroughly mix the fragrance into the base and observe the results. Consider how the scent or taste develops over time and with use. Adjust Based on Preferences: Depending on your initial results, you may want to adjust the amount of fragrance. Repeat the testing with a higher or lower percentage to find the perfect balance for your product. Use Proper Tools: To ensure accurate measurement, use precise tools such as pipettes, droppers, or small scales. Record Results: Keep detailed notes on the amounts used and the resultant scent strengths. This documentation will be invaluable for reproducing or adjusting formulas. Temperature and Mixing: Some fragrances might behave differently under various temperatures and mixing conditions. Pay attention to these variables during your tests. Safety Considerations: Always ensure that the fragrance oils used are safe for the intended application (e.g., some fragrances are not suitable for lip balms due to their chemical composition). Testing with small sample vials is an economical way to explore different fragrances without a significant upfront investment. This method allows you to experiment with various scents and tastes to determine what works best for your products before scaling up to larger quantities.By following these guidelines, you can maximize the utility of your sample vials and gain more confidence in how these additives will perform in your finished products.
